It’s that magical time of year again when we dust off our sparkly outfits, promise ourselves we won’t overdo the prosecco, and most importantly squeeze our feet into shoes we absolutely cannot walk in for longer than 28 minutes.

Yes… Christmas party season is here.

But while everyone else is stressing about Secret Santa and whose turn it is to bring the mince pies, spend a little time thinking about your feet.

Here are some tip's to save your feet this party season....

1. Prep them before the big night, a quick tidy-up makes a huge difference:

Trimmed toenails (properly — with gentle rounded corners )
Corns removed
Hard skin reduced
Moisturiser, moisturiser, moisturiser
If your feet haven’t seen love since summer… get in touch ....

2. Choose your shoes wisely, look for:

A wider toe box
A lower heel
Adjustable straps
Hidden cushioning
If the shoe requires “breaking in,” that’s a sign it’s going to break you - don't wear them !

3. Bring a party survival kit, pop these in your bag:

Plasters
Gel pads
Compeed dressings
A pair of foldable flat shoes to change into if needed

4. Aftercare, when the party ends, treat your feet kindly:

Warm soak
Moisturise
Get ingrown or painful nails checked ASAP - waiting until January never ends well.

We can help your feet to feel wonderful with a Podiatry treatment, get in touch to get booked in and prepared for your christmas party.

Chilblains

Chilblains are small, itchy swellings on the skin that can appear after you’ve been in the cold.

Chilblains can be uncomfortable, but they usually get better on their own within a few weeks.
They most often affect the body’s extremities, such as the toes, fingers, heels, ears, nose and usually develop several hours after being in the cold.

Symptoms of chilblains include:

* a burning or itching feeling in the affected areas, which can get worse if you go into a warm room
* swelling
* the affected skin turning red or dark blue
* in severe cases, the surface of the skin breaks, and sores or blisters develop

You do not usually need to see a GP, as chilblains normally get better on their own within a few weeks.

Chilblains usually heal within 2 to 3 weeks, however do see professional advice if you have the following -

* there is pus coming out of your skin
* your temperature is very high or you feel hot or shivery
* you keep getting chilblains
* your chilblains are severe
* you have diabetes and have chilblains – foot problems can be more serious if you have diabetes

"7th December - Advent calendar of ailments ...."

Corns.

What are Corns?
They are caused by pressure or friction over bony areas, such as a joint, and they have a central core which may cause pain if it presses on a nerve.

There are five different types of corns, the most common of which are ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ corns, but they can all be painful and benefit from professional treatment.

Hard corns – these are the most common and appear as a small area of concentrated hard skin up to the size of a small pea usually within a wider area of thickened skin or callus. This may be a symptom of the feet or toes not functioning properly

Soft corns – these develop in a similar way to hard corns but they are whitish and rubbery in texture and appear between the toes where the skin is moist from sweat or from inadequate drying

Seed corns – these are tiny corns that tend to occur either singly or in clusters on the bottom of the foot and are usually painless

Vascular/neurovascular corns – these are corns that have both nerve fibres and blood vessels in them. They can be very painful and can bleed profusely if cut

Fibrous corns – these arise when corns have been present for a long time and are more firmly attached to the deeper tissues than any other type of corn. They may also be painful

So if your corns are bothering you - get in touch.

Got an ingrown toenail - we can help you !

Ingrown toenails are a common condition which may cause discomfort or become infected.
It can be very painful and usually requires professional treatment.
You really should see a Podiatrist if you have symptoms of infection around the nail, particularly if you have diabetes, a poor immune system or any other foot problem.

Contact us for more information about how we can help you with this painful problem.

NHS England reported 3,890 ingrown toenails presented at A&E last winter. Podiatrists are the experts in foot and lower limb care and can provide specialist care for ingrown nails, including minor surgery to resolve them. Check with your local NHS for podiatry access criteria or find your nearest private podiatrist at https://rcpod.org.uk/find-a-podiatrist and save A&E for the critical care.
