It is with great sadness that we announce the death of the late Mrs Clare Gwynneth Gore.
Wife of the late Tom Gore and former director of Gore Brothers Ltd, passed away peacefully in Maurice House, Broadstairs on the 5th July, aged 89 years.

Michael joined the family firm after leaving college in 1982. After a few years Michael took a short break & explored different career paths. On his return to the family firm 4 years later, he eventually became a company director & has built a strong reputation within the community for his professionalism. Michael has overseen many changes within the firm & is dedicated to providing families with the upmost care.

After leaving Chatham House Grammar School, Ramsgate, Philip joined Gore Brothers Ltd in Margate as part of generation 7 in January 1978. Becoming involved with the Territorial army as an officer cadet, he pursued this twin interest with that of qualifying as an embalmer, and briefly left the firm to read for a science degree in Psychology and Sociology at the university of London in 1980. He returned, full time, to the firm in 1983, completing several funeral-related diplomas during the 1980s. It was obvious that the funeral world he had entered was changing and to that end, Philip enrolled on a part-time masters degree by research at the University of Kent, interviewing his father’s generation about their working lives in a period spanning the 1920s to the later 1980s. This was completed in 1992 and, with his interest piqued, Philip embarked on what was to become a very lengthy study into the background to the processes of sanitation and preservation that is referred to as ‘embalming’ by funeral directors, which was completed in 2005. For this he was awarded his Ph.D by Brunel university, in a very unusual and distinctive area of study.
Having a very wide-ranging experience, Philip is also an on-call consultant for an international disaster management company based in the UK and is now an international repatriation specialist. The remit of international repatriation covers the process of moving people who die abroad, back to their home country, through third party countries and Philip has responded to aviation, man-made and natural disasters within the UK and also in countries within Europe, North, West and Southern Africa, the middle East, the far East, America, the Gulf and the Caribbean.
Philip oversaw the expansion of the firm that started in the later 1980s. Having a history of over 200 years, the firm has had several ‘evolutions’, growing exponentially in the later nineteenth century, readjusting during the nineteen twenties and ‘thirties. The firm moved to their ‘new’ Margate premises in 1862, but by the later 1970s, these premises were proving ill-suited to the demands of modern funeral practice. After a search of some twenty or so years, the firm moved close by to Thanet Road, into premises more suited to the coordination of the increasingly complex funeral arrangements that characterise modern times. However the advent of generation 7 of the family has also coincided with the movement of the firm into adjacent areas of Thanet, culminating with the opening of a new branch office in Ramsgate in 2015, reflecting the widely diversified society that characterises contemporary Thanet. Almost all of the ‘growing years’ took place with the support of Thomas J Gore (1915-2015) whose early working years in the 1930s were very different to that of the contemporary world. The extensive branch network in neighbouring Cliftonville, Broadstairs, Westgate and Birchington means that Gore Brothers Ltd can offer a truly local touch in the organising of today’s funeral services, whilst still retaining the vital local touch of friendly family involvement.
