Meningitis B Vaccine

Dear patient,

The meningitis B vaccine was brought into routine childhood vaccines from 1st September 2015 onwards. For children born prior to this date they will not have received meningitis B as part of their schedule. There are no current changes to the vaccine schedule advised by public health.

If and when that changes, eligible patients will be contacted.

Prophylactic antibiotics are currently being offered to:

Students at Canterbury campus,
All staff who live in the affected halls of residence,
Anyone who attended Club Chemistry on 5th, 6th and 7th March

Those who have been in close contact of any of the above people.
Please contact UKHSA immediately on the number below, or let us know, if you feel you are a close contact and have not been treated.

If you are a close contact please be alert to symptoms of meningococcal disease and septicaemia (including fever, headache, rash, vomiting, limb pain, cold hands/feet, drowsiness or rapid deterioration) and call 999 or attend A&E immediately.

We are unable to provide vaccination for meningitis B at this time to those not due this as part of their immunisation schedule.

If you have further questions call the UKHSA (UK Health Security Agency) on 03442252861 and select option 5 (option dedicated to meningitis queries).

If you live with a condition such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis, it is important to look after your physical health as well as your mental health. A yearly physical health check can help find problems early and get you the right support.

During your check, you may be offered simple checks like height, weight, blood pressure, and a blood test. You can also talk about things like smoking, being active, eating well, and how your medicine affects you. You do not have to have any checks you do not want to have.

The appointment is friendly, private, and focused on you. If you are eligible and have not had your physical health check this year, contact the practice to book one. To learn more, visit www.lpft.nhs.uk/smi-annual-health-check

🌼 The Generation Study

Helping to spot rare conditions early in new born babies

We are taking part in the Generation Study, a national NHS research programme looking at the genes of new born babies. The aim is to find rare conditions early so that children can get treatment as soon as possible.

🩸 How it works

• After birth, with the mother’s consent, a small sample of cord blood is taken.
• This sample is checked for over 200 rare but treatable conditions, such as:
o Sickle cell disease
o Cystic fibrosis
o Hereditary retinoblastoma

🕒 How long the study lasts
• The study is planned to run until December 2026, but it may be extended.
• If you consent, your child stays part of the study until age 16, when they can choose whether to continue.

🔐 Your privacy
• Taking part is completely voluntary.
• You can change your mind and withdraw at any time.
• All information is secure and anonymised.
• Only approved researchers can access the data to help develop new treatments.

Patient Information – Total Triage Appointment Slots

We aim to ensure that all patients receive care that is appropriate to their clinical needs and delivered in a timely manner.

Appointments are allocated by a GP using a Red, Amber and Green priority system:

🔴 Red appointments – Urgent medical issues requiring assessment on the same day and you are usually contacted by phone to confirm this appointment.

🟠 Amber appointments – Conditions that require prompt medical attention but are not urgent emergencies.

🟢 Green appointments – Routine or non-urgent matters that can be safely managed at a later date.

If you are sent a booking link for amber / green and no appointments are available at that time, please try again later.
Appointment slots are released at intervals throughout the day, and availability may change.

As this system is new, we are continuously monitoring how it is working. The number of appointments available within each priority category may be adjusted in response to clinical appropriateness.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation while we continue to review and improve our services.

⚠️ Important Health Awareness – Meningitis ⚠️

We understand that many parents are feeling concerned following reports of the MenB (meningococcal B) cases in Kent.

At present, we are not in an outbreak area, and based on current public health guidance, we are not offering additional vaccines or antibiotics. These are only provided to individuals who are directly affected or identified as close contacts.

A close contact is typically someone who has had prolonged, close exposure to a confirmed case. This may include:
• People living in the same household
• Someone who has had intimate (e.g. kissing) contact
• Individuals who have had direct exposure to respiratory secretions (such as coughing very close by).

While cases remain rare, it’s important to be aware of the symptoms of meningococcal infection, which can appear suddenly and worsen quickly.

🚨 Signs and symptoms to look out for:
• High temperature (fever)
• Severe headache
• Neck stiffness
• Vomiting or feeling very unwell
• Sensitivity to light
• Rash that does not fade when pressed
• Confusion, drowsiness or difficulty waking
• Cold hands and feet, limb pain or pale/mottled skin

⚡ Symptoms can progress rapidly — trust your instincts.

If you notice any of these symptoms, especially in combination, please seek urgent medical attention immediately.

We will continue to follow guidance from health authorities and keep our community updated.

✔️ Good hygiene, not sharing personal items, and staying alert to symptoms can help protect yourself and others.

Please help raise awareness by sharing this post — it could save a life ❤️

Today we’re raising awareness of oesophageal cancer. Symptoms can be subtle but may include difficulty swallowing, persistent indigestion, or unexplained weight loss. If you notice ongoing symptoms, please speak to your GP. Early advice and investigation can make an important difference.

We’d like to thank all our patients for their patience and feedback as we have transitioned to our new Total Triage system.

We’re really pleased with how the new system is working so far, but we are aware that there are still some tweaks to be made. As both our team and our patients continue to get used to the process, we will keep reviewing the booking links and appointment availability to make sure the system works as smoothly and fairly as possible for everyone.

Thank you for bearing with us during this transition and for your continued support while we keep improving the service.

10/03/2026

We have recently introduced new software in the dispensary. While we hope this will not affect your experience, we are currently running slightly behind schedule as we familiarise ourselves with the new system. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this transition.
