HM Queen Elizabeth II.

21 April 1926 - 8 September 2022

Thank you Ma’am. Duty done, sleep well.

With so many of us posting our own tributes and memories of our late Queen, it’s fascinating to see the incredible variety of photographs we choose to use. Some wonderful memories from the Jubillee, those with Paddington being a particular favourite. Lots of pictures with Prince Philip and her family. Pictures of her receiving gifts and flowers from children and well wishers around the world. I chose to use a picture of the young Queen at Trooping the Colour, pausing in her inspection of the parade to seek reassurance from Prince Philip by her side. A moving image, combining duty with a touching display of humility and love.

Whichever of these images resonates with us personally, the one constant was the Queen herself. In the many and various ways in which she served us, she united us, remained constant and held the Country and Commonwealth together. To me, this is the measure of her greatness.

This study, published in “frontiers in psychiatry” suggests regular outdoor exercise reduces anxiety by as much as 60%. Another reason to slip on your trainers and enjoy the great outdoors!

Congratulations to Arthur Lowe, aged 86, for setting a new British record in the 1500 m freestyle!

Click on the link to see the full results by age category. The really interesting point is that the winning times in each age group are within in a minute or so of each other in all age groups between 25-65.
After 65 the winning gap is 3-4 minutes, but there is no significant change until 75+. You’ll note however that Arthur Lowe swims faster than competitors in the younger age group as well! (He’s also faster than me and I’m 50!)
Age is no barrier to exercise, and these results further reinforce scientific findings that our metabolism does not really slow until we reach our 70’s. Even then, it’s still possible to stay fit, active and even compete at the highest level if we want to.

Birmingham Masters swimmer Arthur Lowe set a new British record in the opening session of the Swim England National Masters Championships 2021.

We have vaccines.

We have effective treatments.

The last piece of the jigsaw is to keep our immune systems strong, and reduce our exposure to co-morbidities such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

We can do this by eating a healthy, balanced diet, taking regular exercise and reducing stress with meditation or relaxation.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has today given approval for the first monoclonal antibody treatment for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 in the UK.

A fascinating report from science daily. Metabolism is the process by which your body converts your food and drink into energy. A common misconception is that this process slows as we hit “middle age” (around 40 or so), leading to an inevitable expanding of the waist line!

This recent study shows that this misconception is not correct, and in fact:

Our metabolism is highest in infancy

It slows gradually until we reach 20

Our metabolism stabilises between 20-60

After 60, it slows very gradually, at about 0.7% per year

Weight gain is not inevitable! You can stay as fit and as lean as you were in your 20’s well into your 60’s & 70’s !

How?

By eating a healthy, balanced diet.
Taking regular exercise at the right volume and intensity.
Taking care of your mental health needs.

Most of us remember a time when we could eat anything we wanted and not gain weight. But a new study suggests your metabolism, the rate at which you burn calories, actually peaks much earlier and starts its inevitable decline later than you might think.

A recent study published in the British journal of sports medicine shows that regular physical activity (150 minutes per week) significantly reduces your risk of severe illness if you develop Covid19. This is a healthy and natural way to protect yourself and others, and far more effective than any other non pharmaceutical intervention such as mask wearing.

Objectives To compare hospitalisation rates, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and mortality for patients with COVID-19 who were consistently inactive, doing some activity or consistently meeting physical activity guidelines. Methods We identified 48 440 adult patients with a COVID-19 diagnosis.....

An effective workout is as much about mental effort as well as physical. Maintaining our focus on our performance and how our body is responding will lead to better results, and will strengthen the mind. In this article, Olympian and World champion runner Paula Radcliffe describes how this strategy helped her to succeed.
