It is a perfect day for one of my favourite metaphors! A few days ago I was out in semi-summer wear in the garden, today it was hats and gloves with a bitter cold in the air. The weather has been particularly changeable and it reminded me of the metaphor of our emotions being like the weather. The metaphor is that we are the sky, and our thoughts and feelings are the weather. We can’t control the weather, it changes continuously, and we can’t always predict it that accurately! Very similar to our emotions that can also be unpredictable, changeable and certainly not always in our control. With the weather we adapt, put on our hats and gloves or get an umbrella, to try and get on with our life despite the rainfall or cold wind. Similarly, with our emotions we can learn ways of noticing them and making room for them to move towards what makes our life meaningful despite the thoughts and emotions that show up. I also find it really helpful to not think of ā€˜good’ weather or ā€˜bad’ weather. All weather is necessary, as are our emotions. If your finding your emotional weather difficult to manage, there are ways to help.

The passing of someone like Captain Tom is always so sad. He gave many hope and inspiration at a time it was so needed. We were bought his 100 steps book a while back and this page always stands out. So simple and yet so true!

I hear many people saying that this lockdown feels harder than the previous ones for so many different reasons. Making choices and taking steps towards things that can help us isn’t always easy to do. But it is worth thinking each day about what is going to make this moment/day feel slightly better and more manageable.

Today, despite not really feeling in the mood, I took the family outside which ended up in an interesting science lesson with the kids about ice, a kick about with the football and an attempt at photographing some amazing ice crystals. It didn’t change what is happening in the world, but it was a moment of fresh air and connection which felt good.

There’s a good article about mental health in these tricky times and especially in winter on the BBC website. I always particularly advocate getting out as much as you can. A change of scenery and some exercise always helps, and I know it’s not always easy to get the motivation to get out there! Took the opportunity today to get out and take in the moment for a minute - helps when the frost looks so pretty!! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55264224?fbclid=IwAR1VMyu3dj1jdMgmiBHjAzDMMSgA3AkIDgkR8EP3H9G5OIju1iBGDqNhgj4

Trying something new and totally out of my comfort zone! I have been quite frankly terrified of going underwater for many years. But when the opportunity to try paddle boarding came up this summer I set myself up for getting used to the water and took it a step at a time. Today I went to my favourite place and also my safe place - Wastwater in the Lake District. A huge sense of achievement and so wonderful to get back to this beautiful place after far too long. Grateful for the motivation and support to overcome my fear!

It’s my first day back after two proper and very lovely weeks off. This morning I was frustrated with myself as I was rushing around, feeling unprepared and irritable with the amount of things to do in a short space of time. I found myself remembering this moment a few days before on a beautiful Cornish beach where I felt fully relaxed and peaceful. I was annoyed that I wasn’t feeling it in that moment. On reflection I realise it was unrealistic to expect to feel anything but what I was feeling this morning!! There was a lot to do and I wasn’t very organised! Noticing my emotions and accepting the moment was the key. And now I get to have that peaceful moment now that there is a moment of quiet! ā˜•ļø

Mindfulness is about being present in the moment you find yourself in. I find a lot of people initially think it’s just about meditation. This is such a helpful thing to do as often as you can. Mindfulness whilst doing something more active or participative, such as walking, cooking or whatever it is your doing in the moment, is just as valuable. Here’s a picture of a rather amazing tree we saw on a walk today in the wind. It was easy to be in the moment in such beautiful surroundings and whilst being blown around in a field!
