Retraining running technique to land’ softer’ could be helpful in reducing the the risk of running-related knee injuries.
That’s just one of the findings in this systematic review which looked at 30 studies looking at management and prevention of patella-femoral (kneecap joint pain). The evidence for this was at best low certainty though, so more good quality studies are needed to establish how much changing how you run can influence your risk of getting this type of knee pain. Some other take-ways from this study:

✦Running retraining decisions should be made on an individual basis rather than a one-size fits all approach

✦There is some evidence that increasing cadence and running with a non-rearfoot-strike pattern could be helpful to reduce risk of running-related injury.

✦The existing research shows specific footwear description does not influence injury risk in runners with knee pain.

✦More research will help show a clearer picture of which factors are the most significant to reduce risk of patella-femoral joint pain in runners.

We’re excited to be running the Marlow Santa fun run Courtyard Clinic Marlow to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. We’d love your support for this cause which is so close to our hearts.

MND affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time. There is a 1 in 300 risk of getting MND across a lifetime. It can affect adults of any age, but is more likely to affect people over 50.

MND is life-shortening and there is currently no cure. Although the disease will progress, symptoms can be managed to help achieve the best possible quality of life. The MNDA do great work supporting those with MND, their families and carers to achieve the best possible quality of life, as well as investing in ground breaking research for the diagnosis, treatment and a cure for MND.
Any donation, large or small is appreciated, you can donate through our Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/christmascrackers2022. Thank you! MND Association Marlow Santa's Fun Run

You can’t fail to notice some of the taping and strapping athletes use to manage their injuries, there are some pretty funky colours out there! But what does tape really do? Tape actually works by improving proprioception - that is the body’s ability to sense movement within joints and joint position. This ability enables us to know where our limbs are in space without having to look and tape helps that awareness so reducing risk of worsening injuries. We’ll have more on how to manage acute injuries in this month’s blog post! Courtyard Clinic Marlow

Neuromuscular stimulation is a safe and efficient way to train muscles and can be used for rehabilitation as well as training and recovery. Look out for some serious leg wobbles!!

Muscle stimulation works to works by mimicking the nerve signal sent to activate the muscle, causing muscle contractions.

Here we’re using it on the quadricep muscle, which is a key muscle for knee joint function. It’s a helpful way of maintaining muscle strength while you’re recovering from injury, particularly if you can’t weightbear fully.

If you’re recovering from injury get in touch to find out more about using muscle stimulation as part of your rehab.

Always check with your health practitioner for guidance before using electrotherapy modalities.
