The Abbey Clinic is a well established multi-disciplinary practice based at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, Marlow Bucks. The clinic is available to anyone wishing to use our services. Our regular client base is drawn from the non-sporting general public, up to elite world-class athletes. The clinic is recognised by all Medical Insurance schemes

Our therapists strive to excel in all their treatments. We believe each patient requires an individually tailored programme of treatment which is focused to their own specific needs. We aim not to solely focus on relieving your pain, but also to establish the cause of the problem and prevent a reoccurrence, thus enabling you to return to your normal level of activity; whatever that might be!

Lest we forget

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Exercise of the month: a heel raise (or is it a calf raise 😃).

The beautiful gastrocnemious muscle, the 2nd 'pump' in the body (after the heart), used when standing, walking, running, squatting, and dancing to name but a few 'moves' sits at the back of the lower part of the leg. With all that this fabulous muscle is involved in, it's worth giving it some attention. Enter the heel raise.

Simply standing balanced or supported on 2 feet and raising your heels off the floor is the entry level of a heel raise. After that, we can add height goals of the raise, an elevated position, knee bent, knee straight, leaning towards a wall, some external load, and holds at height before we even start thinking about doing it all over again on one leg!!

Why, we hear you ask? Well, for strength 💪 of course. Strength of the ankle, strength of the foot and toes, balance strength, strength to walk to climb, and so on.

So go on, put this in your weekly strength plan. Start with 8-15 reps x 2-3 sets, depending on your current abilities.

As October is dedicated to breast cancer awareness, it is so important to draw attention to Secondary Breast Cancer too!

Secondary (Metastatic) Breast cancer, while most breast cancers don’t come back after treatment, it’s important to know the signs and symptoms in case they do.

Speak to your GP or breast care nurse if you have any new symptoms that:

✅Are new or unusual for you
✅Don't have an obvious cause
✅Don't go away

The number of women not regularly checking their breasts is at a 4-year high.

New research has revealed that 45% of women in the UK don’t check their breasts regularly, increasing by 4% in the last 4 years. This is concerning as we know that the sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances are of treatment being successful and lives potentially being saved.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to encourage everyone to get checking their breasts regularly. We know it can be hard to get in the habit, but checking regularly it can help you feel more confident in knowing what’s normal for you.

Just remember to…

✋Touch your breasts
👀Look for changes
✅Check any new or unusual changes with a GP

Hoorah, we have another meet the team.
Here we go:

Title / AKA - Gilly

How long have you been working within the medical industry? 3 years

Do you have a favourite thing about being a physio?
I really enjoy building a strong rapport with my patients and helping them make positive changes in their lives in any way I can

To date, what is your greatest sporting memory? Representing GB universities at the European Universities Sports Association rowing regatta in Turkey alongside some of my best mates

Greatest career highlight so far? Having the opportunity to work as the team physiotherapist on a tour to Japan was definitely a standout

Plans professionally speaking - I'm always looking for opportunities to grow and develop - continuous improvement is a key focus for me, as I strive to provide the highest quality care for my patients

Best advice you ever received - 'communication is key' - simple, but it's made a huge difference in both my professional and personal life

Random fact : I can do the worm (don't ask... actually do - I'll probably end up doing it)!

Exercise of the month: (slightly scary sounding) Skull crushers!!!

Who doesn't love good triceps?!

Triceps brachii is the large muscle located on the back of the upper arm.
Action: extending the elbow and straightening the arm.
It has 3 heads - a long, lateral, and medial—that originate from different points on the shoulder blade and upper arm bone but converge to form a single tendon that attaches to the elbow. When you push or straighten your arm, the triceps contract, and they are crucial for activities like push-ups, opening doors, and other movements involving elbow extension.

This exercise is great and can be adjusted to suit needs, for instance it can be done on the floor at home, with one weight or 2, or done with one arm at a time and supporting the working arm.

The name skull crusher, well you can kind of see why it's called that, especially if you get it wrong. 😉

Sophie, one of our fab physiotherapists, has had her total hip replacement surgery and is home starting her journey of rest, recovery, and rebuilding 🥳💪
Don't worry, her very good boy Roscoe will be over seeing her recovery. As you can see he is already assisting her in her exercises.

This is amazing! Does anyone even move like this anymore (except dancers, of course).
