Whilst flip flops offer a breezy alternative to closed shoes, they lack the essential support and stability needed to maintain proper foot alignment. The minimalistic design of flip flops fails to provide arch support, leading to over-pronation or supination - abnormal foot movements that can strain the plantar fascia, (the band of tissue supporting the arch underneath the foot).
Continuous use of flip flops can alter the natural walking gait, placing excessive stress on the plantar fascia, causing inflammation, stiffness and sharp pain under the heel and foot arch. This condition known as plantar fasciitis can severely impact your mobility and make walking or standing unbearable, particularly first thing in the morning.
The lack or cushioning and shock absorption of flip flops can trigger a chain reaction of bio-mechanical problems that extend beyond the feet, into the knees, hips and lower back. The constant strain on these joints and muscles can lead to misalignment, muscle imbalances and chronic pain that hinders your daily activities.
Consider these tips to protect your feet and prevent bio-mechanical issues during the summer months:
1. Choose supportive footwear: Opt for sandals with arch support, cushioning and a contoured footbed to provide stability and alignment.
2. Limit flip flop usage: Reserve flip flops for beach outings and avoid prolonged wear for extended periods.
3. Consult your osteopath if you are having similar symptoms for a bio-mechanical assessment and treatment for the plantar fascia and affected areas. Your osteopath will be able to give you exercise advice to strengthen the feet, calves and core muscles while incorporating stretching routines to improve flexibility and prevent tightness.
Remember, your feet are the foundation of your body's alignment and movement...... take small steps towards big changes - your feet will thank you!
