The problem with YouTube Yoga, apps and DVDs
So many people tell me they do yoga at home, following along with a YouTube or DVD teacher, especially since lockdown in 2020/21. Whilst I am all for getting more people into yoga, for all its incredible benefits, hearing anyone say this always rings alarm bells for me 🔔🔔‼️‼️
The problem is that it’s just a one-way process. The teacher on screen cannot see what you are doing. They can’t tell you if what you are doing is safe for you. They don’t know about your health, previous injuries, your body size or shape. The chances are the person on screen is not exactly the same age, shape, or fitness level as you, so by merely copying them you could be causing lasting and irreparable damage to your body.
You also miss out on the other 7/8 of yoga. Yoga is not and was never meant to be merely an exercise class. Physical postures or ‘asana’ form just one of the 8 parts of yoga. It’s a whole way of life. What these on screen teachers deprive you of is the deeper understanding of yourself, your body, your mind and your interactions with the world that comes with practising physical yoga as part of the bigger picture.
So I would ALWAYS recommend going to a real, in-person class if you can. That doesn’t have to mean being in a room with a group of people who are younger, fitter or thinner than you! I teach one-to-one classes, that are especially written for your unique body shape, health, age, and fitness levels. I work with lots of people who have significant or chronic health issues. During our classes, I can see exactly what you are doing and can offer slight adaptations that might make poses more comfortable or more accessible for you. You are also not tied to the same time or day every week as I work on an appointment basis - just book in whenever you like. So you can work around shift patterns at work, or childcare needs.
