👏 A Huge Thank You to Our Incredible Team 👏

As we reach the end of an extremely busy week, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to our amazing staff for their outstanding work on our COVID and flu vaccination programme.

To date, our team has administered almost 2,800 vaccines - a fantastic achievement that has taken dedication from every corner of the practice.

From booking appointments, to administering vaccines, to documentation and follow-up phone calls, our nursing team, doctors, and administrative staff have all played a vital part. Their hard work is making a real difference to the health and well-being of our patient community.

With Friday finally here, we hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved weekend of rest. Thanks to the team for everything they do.

💙 We couldn’t do it without you.

Please help us keep everyone safe 💚

If you are feeling unwell or have a contagious illness such as COVID-19, please do not attend your routine appointment in person. Instead, please call our reception team to re-schedule or ask about alternative arrangements.

We’ve recently had patients attend appointments such as blood tests and informing the clinician that they have tested positive for COVID, which puts our clinicians and other patients at risk.

Thank you for your understanding, and for helping us protect our staff and community!

Winter Pressures

General practice, like the rest of the NHS, faces increased pressure during the winter months. These are some of the factors that contribute to this.

🚨Seasonal illnesses surge: Viral infections such as flu, covid, RSV and norovirus peak during winter, driving higher demand for GP consultations. These infections can also trigger complications in more vulnerable members of society such as the very young and the frail elderly as well as people living with long term medical conditions..

🚨Exacerbation of chronic conditions: Cold weather and respiratory infections can exacerbate asthma, COPD, heart failure, and other long-term conditions necessitating increased support from the GP.

🚨Higher appointment demand: Winter illness generates demand for more same-day and urgent consultations for acute illnesses and exacerbations of chronic medical conditions. This can result in longer waits for routine appointments.

🚨Staff shortages: The practice team themselves may fall ill during winter, impacting available appointments.

🚨Wider Healthcare system constraints: Winter pressures on hospital services can result in patients waiting longer for investigations, outpatient appointments, and procedures. This can result in patients needing to re-consult with their GP if their symptoms or medical conditions deteriorate.

Patients can play an important role in helping ease winter pressures in general practice.

Here are practical ways you can help:

✅ Get vaccinated: Annual flu and COVID-19 vaccines reduce the risk of seasonal infections and complications.

✅ Practice good hygiene: Regular handwashing, covering coughs/sneezes, and staying home when unwell help prevent the spread of infections.

✅ Manage chronic medical conditions proactively: Keep medications up to date, attend regular check-ups during the year and follow care plans, to avoid flare-ups.

✅ Consider using a Pharmacy, NHS 111, or online resources for self-care before booking a GP appointment.

✅ Cancel appointments if they are no longer required.

✅ Plan ahead: Order repeat prescriptions early and schedule routine check-ups in advance to reduce last-minute demand. Stock up on homely remedies such as paracetamol.

Why can it sometimes be difficult to get an appointment?

General practice is facing unprecedented demand which is outweighing capacity. In September 2025 another record-high of 63.92 million patients were registered with GP practices in England.

Consultation rates per patient have increased, leading to GPs and their teams working harder than ever to prioritise patient care.

General Practice is dealing with increased patient list sizes, an ageing population, and more complex health needs.

Practice teams are struggling to recruit for vacant posts so that patients can still be seen if a colleague is sick or absent.

GPs are being affected by the backlog elsewhere in the NHS.

Practices are underfunded.

Despite these challenges, the number of daily appointments delivered in general practice is increasing.

CPR TRAINING AVAILABLE LOCALLY

Please see this amazing story of a local man who has first hand experience of how important correctly administered CPR is and having an available defibulator is.

RESTART A HEART DAY :

A local retired builder was given bystander CPR in September 2024 and shocked with a defibrillator six times to attempt to restart his heart.

76-year-old Ian Jurd was “blue and lifeless” when his wife, Jackie, walked into their local village hall in Medstead to see their friend performing CPR on her husband of 43 years.

"Ian was dead – I could tell", added Jackie. Dave his badminton friend was performing CPR , and others were organising the defibrillator that is stationed at the hall, and the emergency services were called"

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance crew were dispatched from Thruxton and landed on the cricket green just 100 metres away from the scene. Jackie watched on as they strode into the hall with their kit bags and joined their ambulance colleagues to attempt to save Ian’s life.

Ian was taken to Basingstoke Hospital and after initial treatment was taken to intensive care and kept in an induced coma for five days. He later had three stents and an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted.

Ian said, “To think that two police cars, two ambulances and an air
ambulance turned up within 15 minutes of me collapsing – I wouldn't have had better treatment if I was the King of England.
I look at myself in the mirror sometimes and I can't believe I’m still here. I'm so grateful for everything that was done for me especially the CPR. Jackie and I feel so lucky. We've got a lovely family – with three children and five wonderful grandchildren. To be here for them is just a miracle."

Restart a Heart Day is a national day raising awareness of the importance of performing early CPR... Fewer than 1-in-10 people in the UK survive an out-of-hospital arrest, and for every minute without CPR and defibrillation, the chance of survival reduces by up to 10%.

St Andrew’s Church have raised the funds to install another defibrillator near the entrance to the Church Hall, which is opposite the Castle of Comfort pub.

This provides Medstead with defibrillators at both sides of the village and they have been operational since the 9th October. It is intended to organise several dates for CPR training and familiarising the use of a defibrillator. These will be done by representatives from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance , Alton Cardiac Rehab and Trustworthy Services Training and Support

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Aftercare Lead, Tom Nickisson-Richards, said: “Outcomes like Ian’s are only possible thanks to early CPR and defibrillation - whether it's a friend, family member, colleague or stranger, learning and performing CPR could be the difference between life and death.

When our clinical team arrive on scene and see CPR being carried out, we know that patient has been given the very best chance of surviving and making it home to their loved ones."

COVID-19 vaccine eligibility

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has updated its advice for the autumn 2025 COVID-19 vaccination programme, which has been accepted by Ministers. The focus of the programme is shifting towards targeted vaccination of those at highest risk of serious disease.

For autumn 2025, COVID-19 vaccination will be offered to:
adults aged 75 years and over

residents in care homes for older adults

individuals who are immunosuppressed, aged 6 months and over

This represents a change from the autumn 2024 programme, which also included adults aged 65 to 74, all those aged 6 months and over in a clinical risk group and pregnant women.

The eligibility is the same across the four nations of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).

The vaccine should usually be offered no earlier than around 6 months after the last vaccine dose. Those who are eligible can get protection from an autumn COVID-19 vaccination even if they have not taken up a COVID-19 vaccine offer in the past.

We understand that determining having a weakened immune system (immunosuppression) may be less straight forward than the other criteria. Some of the groups eligible include:

Organ, bone marrow or stem cell transplant patients
Those being treated with systemic steroids for more than a month
Those living with HIV
Those receiving immunosuppressive or immunomodulating biological therapy, including children who are about to receive therapy
Those undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy
Those requiring long-term treatment for immunosuppression
Those with a history of haematological malignancy including chronic leukaemia, lymphomas, and leukaemia
Those with genetic disorders affecting the immune system

While this list summarises some major groups, it does not cover everything.

For clarity the tables 3 and 4 it is only the immunosuppressed sections who are eligible COVID-19 chapter of the Green Book.
