As a recent case in the feed world has shown, even products you think you know can become part of an investigation โ whether itโs a simple product recall or a positive test result on competition day. When anything other than the original packaging ends up in bins, tubs or decanted containers, vital traceability information like batch numbers can be lost.
โ ๏ธ Hereโs why that matters:
โ๏ธ If a product recall or contamination issue arises, authorities and vets need to trace exactly which batch was used to assess any risk or required action.
โ๏ธ In the event of a positive dope test, being able to show when and which batches were fed can be a really important part of investigations.
โ๏ธ Records of batch numbers and purchase/feeding dates isnโt just good yard practice โ itโs recommended as part of clean-sport protocols.
Top tips for keeping track:
๐ Keep the original bags until theyโre empty and/or note the brand, product and batch number into a feed log before you decant into feed bins.
๐ Maintain a simple spreadsheet or notebook with dates, horse name(s) and batch information.
๐ If you use multiple tubs/bins, label them with batch numbers and dates fed.
๐ฃ As a British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) NOPS-accredited supplier, we already log every batch number against customer orders - which means if thereโs ever a concern with a product supplied by us, weโll be in touch directly. Thatโs part of how we help protect your horseโs health and your competition eligibility such as those competing in British Eventing Official.
