💙 Supporting carers through Carer Friendly GP Practices

Teesside Mind has been working with Zetland Medical Practice to help the practice become Carer Friendly and improve how unpaid carers are identified and supported.

Through initiatives such as patient text messages and making a carer registration form available online and at reception, the practice increased the number of registered carers from 133 in 2025 to 339 by January 2026.

Registered carers are offered support through the Social Prescribing Team and encouraged to attend regular health checks to discuss their wellbeing and caring responsibilities.

Sara is one of the amazing peer support workers who make up our Mutual Minds team.

After attending a Lived Experience Event in 2023 while on sick leave due to her mental health, she joined a co-production group, helped develop a service user involvement framework, and went on to co-deliver training to staff.

Being involved in meaningful change gave Sara a renewed sense of purpose and confidence during her recovery — something she now brings to her role, supporting others with empathy and lived experience.

💬 About Mutual Minds
Mutual Minds is a peer support service from Teesside Mind, designed for people experiencing mental health challenges who would benefit from support from someone who truly understands. Our peer support workers use their lived experience to offer safe, non-judgemental support and help you take positive steps forward.

Are you a carer?

Lots of people don't realise they are actually a carer.

🤗 A Carer is anyone, including children, who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support.

💙 The care they give is usually unpaid.

👏 We think Carers are amazing people and we’re here for you, you’re not alone.

💙 Last month, during Children's Mental Health Week, we visited 12 schools to deliver assemblies, group sessions and resources, helping over 4,000 local children.

💙 Yet our ongoing work in school settings is what we’re most proud of.

Here's how Lauren from our Schools in Mind service supported Lucy:

👧 Lucy, 16, said:
"I found sessions so helpful, I'm so thankful Lauren could help with my confidence especially right before my GCSE's. I feel so much happier and confident walking into school or in a large group of people which is something I never thought I could do!"

🏫 School said:
"We're incredibly grateful for Lauren who truly prioritises our students’ mental health. Her support, collaboration, and care make a real difference in helping our young people feel seen, heard, and supported every day."
