'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step' - Lao Tsu

I spotted these geese on my morning walk today and it got me thinking how amazing they are. It looks like they are feeding, preparing for a long migration, maybe thousands of miles.

Such a huge task, yet they achieve it. As people, we often struggle with starting on tasks, feeling it's 'too much', or worrying we are 'not enough'.

So, what can we learn from these geese?! If we are facing a challenge, what can we do?

👉 We prepare for it, as best we can (it doesn't all need to be perfect to start!)
👉 We gather our team around us to offer support
👉 We break it down into steps and then begin by taking that first step (baby steps are good, they build confidence 😁)

"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change"

It's feeling very autumnal on my morning walks now. What does this time of year mean to you? Do you welcome the opportunity to go within and nurture yourself, or do you want to get your wellies on and splash in puddles to attend to your inner child? Or is it a time of year that you dread? 'Reframing' is therapy speak for looking at things differently. It can really change how something feels. The language you use matters, so rather than saying 'I have to go to work', you could say 'I get to go to work'.....same thing, you are just looking at it differently. Give it a try and see if it works for you 😉

If you aren't sure whether your trauma is enough to seek help with, check out the list of symptoms below. You don't need to live with these symptoms. Treatment is very effective. You also don't need a diagnosis to access treatment.

"Is my 'stuff' bad enough? Worse things happen to others"
I hear this so often from clients, wondering if they 'need' trauma therapy. Often, they have pushed their negative experiences to the back of their minds. This helps them to get through daily life....but maybe shows up in their relationships, what they do/don't do in their lives, how they cope with emotions, etc.
I love the book 'The body keeps the score', the key message is that trauma doesn't just go away, it is held in every cell of your body, causing harm and stopping you from living your life fully.
So, if your past is showing up in your present life, maybe it is time to leave it where it belongs. The life of your wildest dreams could be waiting for you.

What does ageing mean to you?

To me it feels freeing...at times....not caring what other people think (if you have seen me out in my dog walking gear, you know this is true 😂), not having pressure to reach certain milestones by a certain age, etc.

It can also feel scary....what will happen when I'm old, how long will I be healthy....how long do I have left to do all that I want to do...

Therapists aren't immune to overthinking either, but I have come to understand this....sitting with the fear is unhelpful, it stops me from taking positive action to make changes and negative thoughts can spiral in that space. So for today, I'm practicing self compassion - taking breaks, spending time outdoors in nature and looking to the future. I've given myself permission....its my birthday after all 😁

Just received some images I had taken for my new website....really stepping out of my comfort zone...but nothing changes if nothing changes!
