"I’m so proud of our team and the difference we’ve made by working together to support patients and families at some of the most challenging times in their lives..."

2025 marked a proud milestone for the Parkinson’s Advanced Symptoms Unit (PASU) as it celebrated 10 years of supporting people living with Parkinson’s and their families.

Since opening in 2015 at Redcar Primary Care Hospital, the service has grown into an award-winning, highly regarded model of care, helping around 3,000 patients navigate the most complex stages of their condition.

From the very beginning, PASU was created with a clear ambition: to provide rapid access, specialist support for people with advanced Parkinson’s who are at high risk of hospital admission or nursing care.

Ten years on, that ambition continues to drive everything the service does.

Festive cheer filled James Cook Hospital recently as staff from the neonatal unit hosted a special Christmas party for former patients and their families.

Around 170 families attended the celebration for children who had been born premature or sick and had spent some time on the neonatal unit at James Cook.

Families enjoyed Christmas music, festive crafts, soft play and sensory sessions.

Food and drinks were also provided throughout the afternoon, thanks to Our Hospitals Charity, creating a relaxed space for families to come together and reconnect with staff.

Santa also made a very special appearance and handed out presents to every child.

Neonatal nurse consultant Lynne Paterson said: “We often spend a great deal of time with families while their babies are on the neonatal unit, often supporting them through some very difficult early days.

“During this time, strong bonds are formed as we care for their babies at the very start of life, when they are at their most vulnerable.

“Once families go home, we often think about how they’re doing so it means a lot to welcome them back and to see our graduates thriving.”

There are still a few days left for you to place a special memorial bauble on our trees 🎄

Our specialist palliative care teams at James Cook have teamed up with Our Hospitals Charity to offer you the chance to remember your loved ones with a personalised memorial bauble.

Each bauble will feature a white feather and a personalised tribute and will be hung on a dedicated memorial Christmas tree at either James Cook or the Friarage. 🪶

All the money raised will support with buying items for the Dragonfly Scheme where our specialist palliative care teams provide comfort bags to patients, families and carers during their final days of life as well as memory boxes for children.

Our specialist palliative care service consists of three teams who provide support to patients and their families who have a life limiting disease, whether this be cancer or non-cancer across Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough and Hambleton and Richmondshire.

➡️If you would like to pay tribute to a loved one, visit https://www.justgiving.com/.../palliativecaresouthtees2025

The team requests a minimum donation of £2.50 per bauble and is accepting contributions until Christmas Eve.
