Today is National Supported Internship Day! The aim of National Supported Internship Day is to raise awareness of supported internships and to advocate for young people with SEN who have ambitions to enter into employment.

We have partnered with NHS England Choices College since 2018 providing work experience placements to their students each year in a variety of departments across the organisation, to help them increase their independence, skills and knowledge of the sector.

This academic year we have two interns, Rheis and more recently Toby, working within our logistics distribution centre stores department.

Initially both students were buddied up with a member of staff to observe their working day; taking in professional behaviours and how employees communicate.

Once they had built their confidence students were assigned carved tasks from the stores officer role, with staff scaffolding their learning and building in new tasks only when the students were ready to progress.

With support from NHS England Choices College, mentor staff within the hospital have been able to provide the students with a fantastic opportunity to learn and grow their skills for employment. Both Rheis and Toby are now working independently, are thriving in their placement and progressing steadily each week.

Congratulations to Alice Franklin, senior specialist physiotherapist, on being one of the only two recognised recipients of the Tessa Jowell Allied Health Professionals (AHP) Research Fellowships in the country.

The inaugural Tessa Jowell Allied Health Professionals (AHP) Research Fellows is the UK’s first national programme dedicated to AHP-led research in neuro-oncology.

Established by the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission (TJBCM) with investment from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) in June 2025, the fellowships mark a pivotal step in strengthening brain tumour care across the UK.

Alice said, “I am delighted to have been awarded a three-year research fellowship from the National Institute for Health and Care Research in conjunction with the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission.

“I feel privileged to have such an incredible opportunity to conduct research that is directly linked with improving patient experience. I am really looking forward to working with my experienced supervisory and mentorship team, a collaboration between Teesside University, University of York, Academic Centre for Surgery at South Tees Hospitals and the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission.

“I hope to grow these relationships and partnerships across these institutions throughout my fellowship.”

At University Hospitals Tees, listening to women and families is at the heart of how we continue to improve the quality of our maternity and neonatal services.

That’s why we are supporting two major national surveys.

The 2026 NHS Maternity Survey invites women to share feedback on the care and support they received throughout pregnancy, labour and birth, and in the weeks after giving birth.

Mums who gave birth under our care in February 2026 may be contacted directly by the NHS and invited to complete a short, user‑friendly survey about their maternity journey.

Parents whose baby received care from our neonatal team in June, July or August 2025 may be invited to take part in the Neonatal Care Experience Survey.

Both national surveys are being carried out across the UK, and the feedback gathered will help improve maternity and neonatal services both locally and nationwide.

Lynne Staite, head of midwifery, said: “Improvements in care begin with an understanding of women’s and families’ real experiences.

“The feedback we receive is invaluable and helps us provide a safe, kind and supportive service to women and families within the Tees Valley and beyond.”

All responses are completely confidential and will help University Hospitals Tees, and maternity and neonatal teams across the country, understand what they are doing well and where they can improve.

Charlotte Pett, Patient experience team survey lead, said: “We know that anyone who gave birth in February will have their hands full with a new baby, but we really encourage every mum who receives a survey letter to take part."

Lynne Paterson, neonatal nurse consultant, added: “We are always interested in hearing about how you experience neonatal care within University Hospitals Tees so that we can better shape our services.

"Similarly, we can also learn across regions, so it is vital to be able to get feedback so that we can compare with different areas and learn from each other."

Survey invitations will continue to be posted out to selected households until April, with national results published later in the year.

12-year-old Henry has now set his sights on becoming a surgeon, thanks to a special career event. 🧑‍⚕️💙

The Health and Social Care Academy at Hartlepool recently welcomed 60 aspiring healthcare workers to an open day. The academy has held similar events in the past, but this one was a little special - it was open exclusively to young family members of staff at University Hospitals Tees.

Henry attended the event with his mum Rachel. His dad, Steven, works as an urgent care practitioner at the University Hospital of Hartlepool.

Rachel said: “This event is really great for kids. Henry has been able to meet specialists from different areas and get an idea of what a career in the NHS might look like. The knowledge and expertise that staff shared with the group, as well as the encouragement to engage with the various stations, were brilliant.

“The passion staff showed for their professions was inspiring, especially for an inquisitive young boy. Henry’s favourite area was theatre. He learned so much there, and the team was incredibly patient while he asked many questions. He was so fascinated that he has now set his sights on becoming a surgeon!

“Today’s been a great opportunity and experience. It will hopefully open the way to better opportunities for the kids who came along.”
