Friday's walk : Wensley, Redmire Force, Preston Under Scar, Leyburn and back to Wensley with an 'interesting' bridge to cross a very full beck en route to the "force'. The fact that the walk was very wet and misty won't come as a surprise.

Let this be a warning to my dear friends and visitors! Please don’t try and cross our river when it’s in flood. Yes, the car is downstream of the bridge and now impossible to get out. They’ve been trying to pull it from our little garth and completely trashed the old turf.
Stay safe and dry everyone, see you in April😊

Aysgarth Falls on today's walk - and given the amount of water in all the becks heading down into the valley the level will continue to rise for some time.

A train glides over Belah Viaduct, England’s towering 1860 masterpiece, blending engineering brilliance with breathtaking height and industrial ambition.

The Belah Viaduct, captured in this striking image, once held the title of England’s tallest railway bridge. Completed in 1860 for the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway, it soared 196 feet (60 meters) above the River Belah valley. Composed of wrought and cast iron, the structure stretched 347 yards (317 meters) with 16 elegant spans, a true feat of Victorian engineering.

Designed by the renowned engineer Thomas Bouch, who later became famous for his work on the ill-fated Tay Bridge, the viaduct combined structural ingenuity with aesthetic grace. Its ironwork, riveted with precision, carried trains safely across the challenging terrain, linking communities and industries in northern England. Photographs of trains traversing the viaduct capture both the scale of the structure and the daring of early railway travel.

Despite its engineering significance, the Belah Viaduct could not escape the widespread closures of rural railways in the 1960s. After the line was shut down, the viaduct was demolished, leaving only memories and historical records of its grandeur. Today, it stands as a symbol of Britain’s railway heritage and the audacious vision of the engineers who transformed landscapes with iron and steel.

Looking for a varied short walk with great views. Snaisgill and Hudeshope Woods from Beck Road is a 2 1/2 mile route which is a good walk at any time of year. Want something a bit longer ? Add is Aukside for a 4 mile walk. Of course for a few more yards you can easily start from Middleton.
