Meet Toby, Director & Principal Funeral Director at Merritt’s of Midhurst.
Toby Merritt is the driving force behind Merritt’s of Midhurst, bringing dedication, compassion and deep local roots to every service. As Business Owner and Principal Funeral Director, Toby personally arranges and conducts funerals to ensure continuity, quality, and a caring, tailored experience for every family he serves. 
A lifelong resident of Midhurst, Toby holds a strong commitment to his community. He served for five years as a retained firefighter at the Midhurst Fire Station, demonstrating a spirit of service and civic responsibility that continues to influence his work. 
Under his leadership, Merritt’s has remained the only independent, family-run funeral service in Midhurst. Toby emphasizes personal connection, ensuring that each funeral honours the life and wishes of the loved one. 
In October 2025, Toby oversaw a milestone for the firm: the grand opening of its new premises at The Garrett on Rumbolds Hill. At the opening he reflected,
“Tonight is not just about the opening of a building … It is about the continuation of a story, a Midhurst story, and one I am proud to be a part of.” 
The new facility includes enhanced features like a small ten-seat chapel, a private chapel of rest, and upgraded family facilities — all built with compassion and dignity in mind. 
Warm yet steadfast, Toby leads Merritt’s with a belief that every farewell should reflect the uniqueness of the individual and bring comfort to those left behind.
