Booking is open for the next Postnatal Planning Workshop for birth professionals!

The Postnatal Planning workshop is designed to help you help your clients prepare for the postnatal period and how to help them put together a postnatal plan. We’ll be covering what to expect physically and emotionally, recovery and self-care, nutrition and relationships among other things.

By the end of the workshop you’ll have better understanding of the 4th trimester, why information and preparation for the postnatal period is important and the difference it can make for parents experience of the postnatal period and how to support parents in preparing for the postnatal period.

This interactive workshop is part of workshop program so you’ll also receive handouts, a postnatal nutrition and recipe booklet and a certificate of completion.

It’s Sunday night and I thought it was time for part 2 of some more random trivia about me. This will be my last instalment, I promise.

💋I once made a taster tape with comedian, Shazia Mirza for a full length tv programme called ‘F**k Off, I Am A Hairy Woman’, about how women feel about their body hair and society’s pressure to remove it. It was commissioned.
💋I once hosted a Vietnamese Supper Club in my house with an amazing Vietnamese chef .co.uk Van Glue. It was a huge success and the food was delicious!
💋 I have very large feet for my mere under 5’5” height - size 8. My 12 year old daughter already has size 7 feet.
💋My party trick is being able to put on my lipstick with my cleavage
💋 I have never done a bungee jump
💋 I once made a documentary about beauty and how you are judged by society if you look different or have a facial difference.
💋 I once did admin in a factory that made female condoms - the Femidom - during my uni holidays. I might still have one somewhere…
💋I have a white poochon called Barbara Windsor (Babs for short) who loves rolling in fox poo
💋 I was once set the challenge of making some short programmes on how to make using archives fun and interesting. Luckily Sue Perkins helped me with some slapstick comedy flourishes.
💋 My burlesque journey began on my hen night when I thought I was just going to have an enjoyable evening out with my girlfriends and instead ended up dressed in an eighteenth century wig, performing a burlesque piece in front of 300 people at the Vauxhall Tavern with compère Amy LeMay
💋I love reading historical fiction

So we made it through the first week of Jan 2022! It’s grey and pouring with rain down here so I thought I would lighten the mood but sharing some trivia about myself:

💋I used to do burlesque dancing and even performed at Madame Jo Jo’s in Soho
💋I have been struck by pink lightening in India
💋I once made a documentary about a father who had 20 children
💋I used to have arachnophobia until I took my daughter to the spider house in London Zoo and now no longer fear them.
💋I speak fluent German and my mum wanted me to be a marketing manager for Lufthansa airlines (I have no clue why)
💋I wish I had studied English and History at Uni not German
💋I was a Samaritan for 5 years and used to visit young male offenders in prison
💋I love beautiful gardens but am useless at gardening
💋My happy place apart from open water swimming is foraging for fungi respectfully in the forests round here
💋I love crafting but am also fairly useless at it
💋I once sat next to David Baddiel in a public WC in Russia. The doors only came up to our necks and we could see each other’s faces reflected in the mirror in front. Let’s just say we both had ‘stage fright’!
💋I have never been a bridesmaid 😔
💋My great grandfather was a prominent engineer of miniature train engines and is a cult figure in the world of railway enthusiasts
💋As a tv researcher, I once got through to a top secret GCHQ building on the phone and they were horrified I had managed this and hung up on me.
💋I love singing and once auditioned for the London show Evita when I was 11. I didn’t get a part as they said I sounded too angelic so had to make do with singing along to Blondie with a fake microphone.
💋I love playing board games and we once encouraged my father to open a shop which would have been called The Games Cave. Sadly he didn’t.

And here is another role that I have been exploring with postnatal doulas who have started or are well underway with their postnatal doula journey.

Last night was the final session for the second group of doulas who completed our inaugural Check In Course.

Their enthusiasm and excitement at having this new offering that is so needed certainly fired me up!

They will be offering new parents check ins at 2, 6, 12, 16 and 20 weeks postpartum. Either as a package or stand alone sessions. Either alongside or separate to their in home postnatal doula services.

Because the NHS 6 week check has been rolled into the 8 week vaccinations and is well below a helpful standard, this is a much needed service and is affordable to new parents.

It has been very fulfilling to witness these doulas grow in confidence and begin their journey to becoming postnatal specialists or even consultants.

Our next Check In Course begins on 3 March and lasts for 5 weeks. The cost is £195 and is suitable for doulas and other practitioners who have knowledge of the postnatal period. Please email info@youniquepostnatal.co.uk for more information and to book.

Many people in the birth world talk about being birth keepers so I started to think about the concept of a postnatal keeper.

Someone who supports and even protects the space of the postnatal period. Because this space needs to be protected.

There is vulnerability for a new mother and parents after they have a baby. They are experiencing huge emotional, physical and physiological changes. They have bought a small and vulnerable human into the world. We need to hold them and blow a bubble of protection around them just like we do in the birth space.

The way a postnatal keeper does this is on multiple levels, emotionally, practically, physically, with information and signposting to other sources of support, for some spiritually and as an advocate so they can make informed choices.

Our next Intuitive Breast and Body Feeding Course begins on Monday 28th Feb over 6 Mondays on Zoom with a face to face day in London.

The course costs £450 plus £150 for 3 case study debriefs with a facilitator, all payable in instalments. You will receive accreditation as an infant feeding support doula or infant feeding supporter.
