Whale flippers and human hands share the same basic bone structure.

Whale flippers and human hands share a fascinating similarity in their bone structure, even though they look very different on the outside. Inside a whale’s flipper, there are bones that correspond to a human’s fingers, palm, and wrist, including the humerus, radius, ulna, and phalanges. This is why scientists say whales and humans have homologous structures — body parts that share a common evolutionary origin.

While whales’ flippers are adapted for swimming and their bones are shorter, thicker, and sometimes arranged differently, the basic layout mirrors that of a human hand. Some whale species even have extra bones in their flippers, a condition called hyperphalangy, so the exact number of finger bones can vary.

This similarity provides strong evidence of evolution, showing that whales and humans share a common ancestor. In short, the whale’s flipper is like a modified hand, demonstrating how evolution reshapes structures for different functions while keeping the same underlying pattern.
