Disc Herniation Doesn't Have to Mean Surgery or a Life of Pain

A herniated disc is one of those diagnoses that can feel overwhelming, but the truth is, most people heal really well without surgery or medication. The disc itself isn't the whole story. Pain and restricted movement often come from how the surrounding muscles, joints, and nerves respond to that pressure, and that's exactly where natural, hands-on care can make a real difference. 🌿

At Tenderleaf Clinic, our chiropractors use the McTimoney approach, a gentle, whole-body method that doesn't involve any cracking or crunching. Instead of targeting just the site of pain, we assess the entire musculoskeletal system because what's happening in your lower back may well be connected to imbalances elsewhere. We also draw on additional therapies like the Emmett Technique (a precise muscle release therapy that can bring almost instant relief) and the Dorn Method, which uses your own guided movements to support the body back into better alignment. The goal is always to work with your body, not against it. Have you been told you have a herniated disc and aren't sure where to turn next? Or perhaps you've been managing back pain for a while and haven't found lasting relief? 💬 We'd love to hear where you're at.

The Mind-Body Link Most People Overlook

Physical pain and mental wellbeing are more connected than you might think. When your spine is under stress, your nervous system feels it too, and that tension doesn't just show up as back pain. It can quietly chip away at your mood, your sleep, and your sense of calm. 🌿

At Tenderleaf Clinic, our approach looks at the whole picture. Chiropractic care works to restore proper nervous system function, which can support that sense of ease and wellbeing many patients describe after treatment. Techniques like Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) are designed to optimise cerebrospinal fluid flow and relax tension in the membranes around the brain and nerves, while our sports and remedial massage is known to reduce stress, ease anxiety, and improve sleep quality. When the body moves and functions better, the mind often follows. Have you ever noticed your mood lift after a treatment or a good stretch? What does your body tell you when it's carrying too much tension?

Are Your Spinal Discs Getting Enough Water? 💧

Most people know hydration is good for them, but very few realise just how directly it affects the health of their spine. The discs between your vertebrae are made up of roughly 80% water when you're young, and they rely almost entirely on you drinking enough fluids to stay plump, flexible, and able to absorb the shock of everyday movement. When those discs dry out over time, they lose height and resilience, which can lead to stiffness, pressure on surrounding nerves, and that nagging back pain that seems to creep up for no obvious reason.

This is especially important as we get older, because our discs naturally lose some of their water content with age. Staying consistently well-hydrated (aiming for around 6 to 8 glasses of water a day) is one of the simplest, most overlooked things you can do to support your spinal health long term. Alongside good hydration, regular chiropractic care can help maintain proper spinal alignment, taking unnecessary pressure off those discs and keeping your whole musculoskeletal system working as it should. Have you ever linked your back discomfort to how much water you're drinking? Or are you curious how chiropractic care could support your spine alongside the lifestyle changes you're already making? 🌿

Why Waiting for Pain to Strike Is the Costlier Option

Most people only think about their spine when something goes wrong. But regular chiropractic maintenance care works on a completely different principle: keeping your body functioning well before problems have the chance to take hold. At Tenderleaf Clinic, patients often tell us they originally came in for a specific issue (a running knee injury, persistent back pain, sciatica) and then discovered that ongoing, routine care every 8 to 10 weeks made a genuine difference to how they felt day to day. It is not just about pain relief. Regular adjustments support better mobility, help manage conditions like joint pain linked to osteoarthritis, reduce muscle tension, and can even assist with migraine prevention.

The great news is that this approach suits almost everyone, whether you are an active adult wanting to stay independent as you age, someone managing a long-term condition, or a senior looking to maintain your quality of life naturally. Our team uses gentle, precise adjustments (no cracking or crunching) tailored to your individual needs, and care can be combined with sports and remedial massage for a fully balanced approach. So, have you ever considered making chiropractic care part of your regular health routine rather than a one-off fix? Or are you currently managing something like back pain or headaches that might benefit from a longer-term plan? We would love to hear your experience in the comments. 👇

Is Your Hip Alignment the Real Cause of Your Back Pain?

Most people treat lower back pain where they feel it, but the root cause is often somewhere else entirely. Your hips and lower back work as a connected system, so when the pelvis or hips fall out of alignment, the spine has to compensate. Over time, that compensation creates muscle imbalances, uneven joint loading, and the kind of persistent lower back pain that just won't shift no matter how much you rest.

This is exactly the type of issue our chiropractors at Tenderleaf Clinic assess during an initial consultation. Using approaches like McTimoney Chiropractic and Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), which focuses specifically on the relationship between the sacrum (the base of your spine) and the rest of your body, our team looks at the whole picture rather than just the area causing discomfort. Have you ever been told your back pain might actually be coming from your hips? Or have you been managing lower back discomfort for a while without getting to the bottom of it? 💬 We'd love to hear your experience in the comments.

Three Years of Care — and Still Going Strong 💚

When someone sticks with the same clinic for over three years, that says everything. Nathan has been visiting Tenderleaf Clinic regularly since the start, and his experience reflects exactly what we set out to create — a place where you feel genuinely listened to, well cared for, and better every time you leave.

In Nathan's own words: "I always leave feeling better than when I arrived." That's the standard Dr Larisa Bogle DC and the whole Tenderleaf team hold themselves to, every single appointment. Whether you're managing ongoing discomfort, working on your mobility, or simply taking a proactive approach to your spinal health, consistent, personalised chiropractic care can make a real difference to your quality of life. Have you been putting off addressing an ache or pain that's been bothering you? Or perhaps you're already on your own chiropractic journey — how long have you been going, and what's kept you coming back? 🌿

Is Your Spine Curved the Wrong Way?

Kyphosis and lordosis are two of the most common spinal curvature conditions we see, and yet so many people are walking around with them without realising the root cause of their back pain, stiffness, or postural changes. Kyphosis creates that rounded, hunched appearance in the upper back, while lordosis refers to an exaggerated inward curve in the lower back. Both can affect how you move, how you feel, and your overall quality of life if left unaddressed. 🌿

The good news is that natural, non-invasive approaches can make a real difference. Chiropractic care (particularly the gentle McTimoney approach used here at Tenderleaf Clinic) focuses on correcting spinal alignment, restoring nerve function, and supporting the body's own ability to heal, without medicines or surgery. A thorough assessment of your neuromusculoskeletal system helps identify the specific imbalances driving your symptoms, and from there a personalised care plan can include spinal adjustments, targeted mobilisations, and tailored exercise and lifestyle advice. Have you noticed changes in your posture recently, or been living with nagging back discomfort you haven't yet had properly assessed? We'd love to hear from you in the comments, and if you're based in Milton Keynes, our team is here to help. 💚

Our Story

Welcome to Tender Leaf Chiropractic, specialists in musculoskeletal medicine. We offer a mixture of therapies including: McTimoney and Diversified Chiropractic, Impulse Adjusting, Sports Massage, EMMETT Technique and DORN Therapy.

By utilising a mixture of spinal manipulation techniques, soft tissue work, rehabilitation (stretch/strengthening) and ergonomic programs, our aim is not only to alleviate pain and/or symptoms, but to get to their root cause.

At TLC we understand that you cannot focus on sickness and disease and expect health and wellness to prevail. Merely treating symptoms and refusing to look at the body as a whole, self-healing system is a harmful mistake that is all too common.

We take a broader approach to your health by working to remove the cause of your problem. We can assist in relieving pain, restoring function and helping you maintain optimal and continual health with ongoing wellness care.
