Safety Centre - Hazard Alley

Safety Centre - Hazard Alley The Safety Centre is a registered charity teaching people across the region how to stay safe. We also offer First Aid and Fire Safety Training courses.

Opened in 1994 by Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Gloucester, the Centre quickly established itself as a 'must do' for schools seeking innovative new ways to introduce children to elements of the National Curriculum such as peer pressure and bullying, vandalism and personal safety. We now have an average of 20,000 children, including special needs groups, visiting per year. Since our inception, over 320,000 school children have received our interactive safety education. In 2004, the centre completed a major rebuild, including the installation of a disabled lift, which further improved the facilities for the children. In the same year we celebrated our 10th birthday and on this occasion, The Duke of Kent visited while a local school group, Giffard Park, was on their tour.

This we take the opportunity to highlight some of the incredible trailblazing female role models who inspired generations of women to follow in their footsteps and join a community dedicated to keeping us safe and well in our emergency services every day.

๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ
In 1865, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson became the first woman to qualify as a doctor in Britain. She bypassed bans on female students by studying privately and finding a legal loophole. Her actions forced a change in rules to prevent other women from following her, a restriction that lasted for 23 years. She later became the first female mayor and first female magistrate in the UK.ย

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿš“
In 1915, Edith Smith made history as the UKโ€™s first female police officer with powers of arrest, despite the Home Office advising against itโ€ฆ. It took another 60 years before women could join public order policing, which is the branch of policing focused on public safety during protests, marches, demonstrations and civil unrest.

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿงฏ๐Ÿš’
Although records show women working in the fire service since 1879, itโ€™s hard to believe that just 34 years ago, in 1982, Josephine Reynolds became the first female wholetime firefighter in Britain after training with Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service. Today almost 4000 female firefighters across the UK keep us safe and continue to inspire other woman to join the fire service.

We give a particular shoutout to and who have supported since our inception in 1992.

SAFER INTERNET, EVERYDAY.

At The Safety Centre, Hazard Alley, we teach children, young people, adults, staff groups, parents and teachers all about the ways to keep safe online.

We want a future where children are not exposed to harmful and inappropriate material, and we believe that we can do our bit to educate and raise awareness to the risks online, so that we can create a future of safer online spaces and experiences.

We love the safe side of the online world, so let us teach you about the unsafe parts so that you know what to do if you, or someone you know needs some help.

- Talk to someone. A trusted adult. Companies and charities that help with online safety advice, like .watch.foundation

- Don't Respond, Show someone / get a screenshot, Report, Block.

- Fraudsters, Scammers, Hackers are criminals and can be charged by police, so report it!

- Cyberbullying is illegal, and we all have a digital footprint. This means, even the stuff we delete online still exists there, so be kind when you are messaging online.

- Don't be afraid to report something you don't think is right (even if your friends are involved!)
