It is a common question in our clinic: why do we sometimes adjust the opposite side of where you feel pain?

The answer lies in understanding cause versus effect. Pain is a signal that something isn’t functioning well, but it isn’t always the source of the issue. Because the body functions as a connected system, dysfunction in one area often leads to compensation elsewhere.

In the Gonstead approach, we perform a detailed analysis to identify the primary area of spinal dysfunction-the vertebral subluxation-rather than simply chasing symptoms from place to place. Our goal is to restore better spinal function so the nervous system can operate as efficiently as possible.

Why is your pain on the right, but the adjustment is on the left?

The answer lies in understanding Cause vs. Effect. Pain is often the result of a problem, but it isn’t always the source. While pain signals that something in the body isn’t functioning well, it doesn’t always tell us where the underlying issue began.

In our clinic, we use the Gonstead Technique to look at the spine as a connected system. By identifying areas of dysfunction-known as vertebral subluxations-we aim to restore better spinal function rather than just chasing symptoms.

Chronic pain isn’t just a “part of life”- it’s often a sign that your body has been compensating for a misalignment for too long.

When your spine is out of alignment (subluxation), it creates uneven stress on your joints and interferes with your nervous system. This “mechanical” stress is what often leads to that stubborn, 3-month+ chronic discomfort.

How Chiropractic relates to your chronic pain:

🔹Realignment: We aim to reduce the pressure on your nerves that may be sending those constant pain signals.
🔹Restoring Function: By correcting misalignments, we help your body stop “working around” the problem and start moving correctly again.
🔹Prevention: Regular care helps distribute weight evenly across your spine, slowing down the wear and tear that leads to future stiffness.

Don’t let “stiff” become your new normal. Take a proactive step for your long-term mobility.

While it’s often associated with aging, chronic pain is not an inevitable part of growing older. With proactive measures, you can reduce your risk and maintain a high quality of life.

Often, what we feel as we age arises from these three sources:

1️⃣ Old Injuries: A fall or a sports injury from years ago might have “healed,” but if the joint mechanics weren’t restored, your body is still using compensation patterns to protect that area.
2️⃣ Chronic Degeneration: When the spine is out of alignment, it creates uneven wear and tear (like a car out of alignment wearing down one tire). This speeds up issues like disc thinning, arthritis and joint stiffness.
3️⃣ Spinal Misalignments (Subluxations): These create direct nerve irritation, causing a “glitch” in how your brain communicates with your body. This keeps your nervous system on high alert, leading to that nagging, constant discomfort.

At TOPCHIRO, we don’t just look at the symptoms. We look at the relationship between your structure and your nervous system.

By identifying these imbalances early, we can help restore proper function and mobility-helping you stay active, rather than just “managing” the pain.

Chronic pain is defined as any pain persisting for three months or longer. While many people believe that daily aches and joint stiffness are simply “part of getting older,” this is a significant misconception. Chronic pain is an indicator of underlying physiological stress-often originating from degenerative conditions like arthritis, poorly healed past injuries, or modern lifestyle factors like prolonged sitting and poor posture.

When pain moves from acute to chronic, it begins to impact more than just physical movement; it affects your sleep cycles, mental health, and overall quality of life. The key to prevention is shifting from a reactive mindset to a proactive one. By understanding that pain is a signal of nerve irritation or spinal misalignment (subluxations), you can address these issues before they become permanent

Most people search for a chiropractor because they’re in pain.

🔹Back pain.
🔹Neck pain.
🔹Sciatica.
🔹Headaches.

But chiropractic care is not only about relieving pain.

More individuals, athletes, and families are choosing a proactive approach - focusing on performance, recovery, and long-term nervous system function.

At the centre of chiropractic care is the connection between the brain and the body.

Your brain sends messages through the spinal cord and nerves to every muscle, joint, and organ. This communication controls movement, coordination, sleep, digestion, recovery and adaptation to stress.

When spinal biomechanics are altered, this communication may become less efficient. Chiropractic assessment focuses on identifying areas of dysfunction and supporting optimal nervous system function.

Why do athletes choose performance-based chiropractic care?

Because efficient brain-to-body communication plays a role in:

🔹Timing and coordination
🔹Movement efficiency
🔹Reaction speed
🔹Recovery between training sessions

We often see golfers, runners and gym-based athletes who are not in pain but want to function at their highest level.

Why do families choose preventative care?

Children experience rapid growth, sports participation, falls, heavy school bags, and increasing screen time. Assessing spinal function during development may help support healthy growth patterns and optimal neurological function.

Preventative chiropractic care is not about “fixing posture” or chasing symptoms.

It is about assessing and supporting the nervous system so the body can adapt, recover and perform as efficiently as possible.

Chiropractic is more than pain relief.

It is about performance.
It is about prevention.
It is about taking a proactive approach to health.

If you would like to learn more about performance or preventative chiropractic care, contact our clinic to discuss whether an assessment may be appropriate for you💙

Our Story

Our unique practice focus is to correct the underlying structural deficits in your spine, we call that neuro-structural correction. The neurology is the information that travels through your spinal cord, between your brain and body that controls all your life functions. Whilst there are many different approaches within chiropractic most fall under the category of Traditional Chiropractic. The main goals of Traditional Chiropractic are: • Reduce pain. • Decrease muscle spasm • Increase range of motion. Whilst we agree these are a great start, Structural Chiropractors take things a step further and focus on guiding the spine back towards it’s NORMAL position. By addressing Structural Shifts in the spine we are often able to address the underlying cause of many Secondary Conditions (commonly known as symptoms).
