The tradition of eating pancakes specifically came from a need to use up rich, indulgent foods before the Lenten fast. During Lent, items like eggs, milk, and fat (butter/lard) were traditionally forbidden.
Pancakes were the perfect solution because:
• They used up all the "temptation" items in one go.
• The ingredients (flour, eggs, milk) were staples that needed to be cleared before they spoiled.
• They provided a high-calorie "last hurrah" before the lean weeks ahead.
We just made them because we like eating them….with our favourite topping.
