🧬 World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. The date—14 November—marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin in 1921.
This year’s campaign emphasizes that:
🔵Diabetes can affect anyone, from childhood to older adulthood.
🔵Integrated care and supportive environments are essential at every stage of life.
🔵Workplace well-being is a key focus, encouraging employers to support employees with diabetes.
🔵The campaign also promotes early diagnosis, healthy living, and access to care, especially in underserved communities
Over 537 million people worldwide live with diabetes, and many more remain undiagnosed. In the UK, type 2 diabetes is the most common, but type 1 diabetes—often diagnosed in childhood—also requires lifelong management.
