Leedam Natural Burials

Leedam Natural Burials We operate 10 natural burial grounds across the UK, all set within beautiful unhurried, countryside.

http://www.leedam.com/

We are passionate about changing people’s funeral experiences for the better and believe that the space, peace and comfort needed at such times can be found in a natural setting. A funeral at a natural burial ground is somehow gentler, more relaxed and less stressful. Expressing individuality at a funeral can be accommodated at a natural burial ground more easily than at a crematorium or local cemetery. In recent research by a big chain of funeral directors modern funerals are described as 'celebrations' but in our experience funerals are still funerals. Someone has died, and everyone feels pretty low but the scope for saying goodbye in your own way is enormous and this is where we can help. There is nothing we don't know about what is possible and/or allowed! Our natural burial grounds are rural places where the use of the land for burials is complementary to the traditional use of the land as pasture, meadow or woodland. They are real landscapes, not artificially landscaped parks.

There’s something quietly comforting about the first signs of spring.

Daffodils lifting towards the light.
Fresh green hills stretching out under brighter skies.
Small bursts of colour appear in the grass.

It certainly feels a little bit like Spring at the Usk Castle Chase Natural Burial Meadow today 🌿

March is Free Wills Month

A UK-wide initiative helping many people aged 55+ write or update a simple will at no cost.

It’s supported by a number of charities across the UK, who cover the cost of basic wills with participating local solicitors. There’s no obligation to leave a gift to charity, but many people choose to support causes close to their heart.

How Free Wills Month works:
• Participating solicitors offer free will appointments during March
• Availability depends on location and spaces can fill quickly
• You simply book with a listed solicitor and have your will written or updated

Where to go for help:
You can find more information and check if your area is included by visiting:

https://freewillsmonth.org.uk/

The website allows you to search for participating solicitors near you.

Many people also use this time to note their funeral wishes within their will, simply to make things clearer and easier for loved ones in the future.

Planning ahead isn’t about being morbid; it’s about peace of mind and care for the people we love.

If planning ahead has been on your mind recently, you’re always welcome to get in touch for a gentle, no-pressure chat.

Free Wills Month brings together a group of well respected charities to offer members of the public aged 55 and over the opportunity to have their simple Wills written or updated free of charge by using participating solicitors in selected locations around England and Wales.

At Leedam , we aim to keep the landscape as natural and peaceful as possible. For this reason, we do not place traditional headstones or plaques on individual graves.

Instead, families have the option to dedicate a memorial plaque within our shared memorial panels and shelters. These spaces provide a place to remember loved ones while allowing the surrounding meadow and wildlife to flourish naturally.

For many visitors, these memorial areas offer a quiet place to pause, reflect, and feel connected, while helping preserve the gentle, natural beauty of the grounds.

Memorials come in many forms, and each one holds its own special meaning 🤍

🌱 The Quiet Arrival of Snowdrops

Snowdrops are often one of the first signs that winter is slowly giving way to spring. Their small white flowers appear during the coldest months, quietly bringing a sense of hope and renewal to the landscape.

For many, snowdrops symbolise new beginnings, remembrance, and the gentle continuation of life through changing seasons.

At this time of year, their delicate blooms can be found appearing across natural spaces, reminding us that even in the quietest months, nature continues to grow and change.

A small but beautiful sign that brighter days are ahead 🤍

❤️ Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love in all its forms, the love we share with partners, family, and friends, and the love that continues long after someone has gone.

Love doesn’t end. It changes, it continues, and it lives on in memories, places, and the world around us.

Thinking of all those remembering someone special today. Our burial grounds are always open for those who wish to visit 💚

If someone you love dies, grief isn’t the only thing families face.

Alongside the shock and sadness, people are often asked to make decisions quickly, and sometimes while still in shock.

Decisions about where someone should rest.
What kind of farewell feels right.
Who should be involved.
And what mattered most.

No one should have to guess.

That’s why we’ve written a gentle blog about what information can help to have written down in advance, not to remove grief, but to make space for it.

The blog explores:
• Why planning ahead is an act of kindness
• What families are often asked to decide in the first days
• What practical information helps most
• How clarity can soften the edges for the people you love

You can read it here:
https://www.leedam.com/journal/what-information-should-you-leave-when-you-die-a-gentle-guide-for-planning-ahead/

The blog also links to our free "For When I Die" pdf booklet for anyone who wants a gentle place to start.

You can’t plan for grief.
But you can soften the edges for the people you love most.

A gentle guide to help you record important details, funeral wishes, and practical information to support your loved ones when you die.

World Wetlands Day 💧

Wetlands are places where land and water meet -
slowing floods, filtering water, storing carbon,
and quietly supporting wildlife.

They remind us that the most important work
often happens slowly, beneath the surface.

Today, we’re thinking about the value of
protecting these living landscapes. 🌿

Our Story

http://www.leedam.com/ We are passionate about the countryside and making funerals better. We believe that the space, peace and comfort needed at such times can be found in a natural setting. A funeral at a natural burial ground is somehow gentler, closer, and more real.

Our website offers years of diverse experiences, stories and guidance, which we hope will help you organise the day. Afterwards, our natural burial grounds are special, rural places where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life - places of escape, away from it all. They are also managed sustanably, for the long-term, being grazed or cropped for hay or planted to establish new native woodland. They are real landscapes, part of our countryside. Modern funerals are often described as 'celebrations' but putting the ‘fun’ into funerals is not always apt. Someone has died, and the mood can be sombre; the need for ritual is deepset and gimmickery doesn’t feel right. However, the scope for honouring the person and saying goodbye in your own way is enormous and it can help to discover how others have approached the day.

Choosing natural burial is an unselfish act - generous restraint, which protects and preserves the land for future generations. It is also the most environmentally friendly way to deal with one’s remains, which is important in today’s unprecedented scale and pace of environmental change.

Thank you.
