🌌🐦 A Magical Murmuration Moment at Esmere Gardens 🐦🌌

This week, both residents and staff have been captivated by a truly beautiful sight outside Esmere Gardens — the chance capture of several murmurations of starlings swirling across the sky. Large flocks swooped and dived in perfect synchrony, forming ever-changing shapes that felt almost mesmerising to watch.

As lovers of nature and wildlife, our residents have enjoyed pausing to admire these moments together, sharing thoughts, memories and quiet wonder as the birds danced against the evening sky. It has become a real talking point and a privilege to witness.

These gatherings usually take place around dusk during autumn and winter, as starlings come together to roost for warmth and safety. A gentle reminder of the beauty of nature unfolding right on our doorstep. 💛

⚽🖤🤍 Supporting Lifelong Passions at Esmere Gardens 🤍🖤⚽

At Esmere Gardens, we are proud of our ongoing commitment to supporting our resident Eddie in his lifelong passion for Newcastle United — and for the second year running, we were delighted to make another memorable football experience possible. This year, we were also fortunate to include another resident, Roger, along with his family, for the Wolves vs Newcastle match on Sunday 18th January.

The afternoon was enjoyed by all, with great company, good food and, of course, Premier League football. Roger shared afterwards, “It was an interesting afternoon with some decent people. We had something to eat and a refreshing glass of beer. I enjoyed the football match with my son… though I can’t say the same for the teams that played!” (said with a laugh). His son, Christian, added how special it was to revisit their hometown together and enjoy such a nostalgic and meaningful day, praising the thoughtful support that made the experience so relaxed and enjoyable.

Eddie was equally thrilled, describing the fantastic VIP experience: “They gave us a VIP box in level 1… a beautiful room with food and drinks, great views of the pitch and even fresh air when we wanted it. The food was brilliant.” Moments like these remind us how important it is to continue supporting personal interests and lifelong loves — because at Esmere Gardens, life is truly for living. 💛

🥁🎶 Rhythm, Laughter and Learning with Nicki 🎶🥁

Our residents had a fantastic time recently enjoying a drumming session with Nicki from Sentimental Journeys. After learning how to hold the drumsticks correctly and practising a few simple rhythms, everyone soon found their groove and began making music to well-known songs from a variety of genres.

Drumming offers so many benefits, from supporting cognitive function and lifting mood to improving coordination, motor skills and physical wellbeing. It also encourages social connection and shared enjoyment — and judging by the smiles and laughter, our residents were having just as much fun as they were gaining from the session. 💛

☕🍰 A Delicious Afternoon at Wayside Farm Shop 🍰☕

We recently enjoyed a lovely afternoon at the tearoom and farm shop at Wayside near Eynsham, where everyone was spoilt for choice from a tempting menu of treats.

Rita and Eddie both declared their toasted teacakes delicious, John thoroughly enjoyed a fruit scone with clotted cream and jam, while Gretel opted for a cheese scone with butter. Others sampled a variety of cakes and flapjacks, all described as absolutely scrumptious — with portions generous enough to warrant a doggy bag or two for later!

Afterwards, residents enjoyed a relaxed browse around the farm shop before hopping back on the Hedgehog bus for the journey home. A perfect afternoon of good food, good company and gentle adventure. 💛

🎂🎉 Celebrating George’s Birthday at Esmere Gardens 🎉🎂

We recently celebrated our much-loved resident George’s birthday, and what a joyful couple of days it turned out to be. On Sunday, George was surprised by his family who, with the help of our wonderful kitchen and hospitality teams, organised a birthday party that he thoroughly enjoyed. His granddaughter added a personal touch by decorating his room with a humorous birthday banner that perfectly matched their shared sense of fun and gave staff plenty of smiles too.

On his actual birthday, George was treated to another surprise when the Esmere Gardens team gathered to sing a heartfelt rendition of Happy Birthday. He was gently encouraged to open his gift, which tickled his sense of humour and appealed to his love of guinea pigs, a book titled The Guinea Pigs Guide to Training Humans. The laughter said it all.

George then headed out in the afternoon to celebrate further with his family, rounding off two days filled with warmth, laughter and thoughtful surprises. A very happy birthday to George, it was a pleasure to celebrate with him. 💛

🎂🎶 Jean Turns 21… Again! 🎶🎂

Recently our delightful resident Jean celebrated being 21 again and enjoyed a truly special day surrounded by love and laughter. The celebrations began with a lovely lunch out with her family, followed by a relaxed gathering back at Esmere Gardens in the pub lounge with family and resident friends.

Jean was pleasantly surprised with her favourite kind of cake — a classic plain fruit cake — and showed great finesse as she blew out her candles. She was also thrilled to receive a thoughtful birthday gift on behalf of Esmere Gardens from her long-standing family friend, Eddie. The glasses chain was put to immediate use… no more misplaced glasses for Jean!

The afternoon was filled with joy, laughter and music, with Jean’s favourite songs playing in the background. A special request of “These Boots Are Made for Walking” by Nancy Sinatra had everyone singing along together — the perfect ending to a wonderful birthday celebration. 💛

🧳✨ A Journey Through Memories with Pam’s Curiosities ✨🧳

Last week, we enjoyed a truly special reminiscence session when Pam, a friend of our lovely resident Jean, visited Esmere Gardens with boxes of fascinating curiosities she has collected over many years. Each item sparked sensory clues and gentle nostalgia, encouraging residents to guess, remember and share their own experiences.

As Pam revealed the stories behind each object, memories came flooding back — of mothers, fathers, grandparents, and moments from residents’ younger years when these items were part of everyday life. The room quickly filled with lively conversation, laughter and shared recollections.

The session was so well loved that everyone agreed they’d like to see more of Pam’s collection — so we’ve invited her back for a second round of this wonderful memory-sharing activity. Something for our residents to look forward to very much. 💛

🎹🎂 A Beautiful Birthday Celebration for Michael 🎂🎹

Our lovely resident Michael celebrated his 82nd birthday on Sunday with a truly special and thoughtful treat, shared with friends, family and fellow residents. Knowing Michael’s love of classical music, we arranged an intimate classical piano recital to mark the occasion.

With kind permission to use one of our resident’s pianos, the wonderful Harriot stepped in at short notice and delivered a hushed, all-absorbing performance. Michael and his guests were captivated by favourites including Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata (first movement), Venetian Gondola Songs by Mendelssohn, Pathetique Sonata (second movement) by Beethoven, and Chopin’s Raindrop Prelude. The room was filled with calm, focus and appreciation for every note.

Michael described the recital as a “lovely birthday gift” that he enjoyed immensely. Afterwards, everyone gathered to enjoy hot drinks and share Michael’s birthday cake together. We’re delighted to say that Harriot is a wonderfully versatile pianist, and we hope to welcome her back again soon — something our residents can very much look forward to. 💛

12/01/2026

We were delighted to welcome back one of our residents’ favourite entertainers, who returned to sing and play country rock favourites on guitar. As ever, he was just as popular — and the atmosphere was electric!

From toe-tapping and clapping to gentle swaying and plenty of singing along, our residents fully embraced the music. Classic hits like Bill Haley’s Shake, Rattle and Roll and the much-loved Neil Diamond anthem Sweet Caroline had everyone joining in and smiling from ear to ear.

A wonderful afternoon filled with rhythm, nostalgia, and feel-good energy — music truly brings us together. 💛
