How lovely. The comfort reminiscing can bring for some.
'She wrote this poem in 2019, when she obviously realised something wasn't "quite right."'
Joanne shared this moving poem with us, written by her mother Margaret who lived with Alzheimer's disease, and who sadly passed away last year.
'During her very fulfilled life she loved writing poetry which she still managed to do almost right up until the end of her life even with the severe visual impairment.
‘Margaret could no longer read her “Times” newspaper or any books, so writing poems was her way of trying to keep her brain active and would write all her thoughts down in poetry fashion.’
The poem is called ‘Lost or Regained’ and it reads:
One’s falling apart at the seams
Dementia’s on its way,
A life that was once full of dreams
Is fading so gently away.
The body is slower
And eyes are less bright
Driving and cycling are impossible now,
Just strolling is nearer the mark!
Though a stroll through the park
On the arm of a friend is still a great pleasure one finds,
Reminiscing of years of sadness and joy,
Shed tears for the friends you’ll not see again.
Though if stories of heaven can still be believed,
Then not paradise lost
But paradise regained
