A dementia-friendly society is one that recognises and responds to the needs of people living with dementia. 🥰

It features safe, easy-to-navigate public spaces, businesses and services that understand dementia, and communities offering inclusive activities.

Raising awareness and educating everyone from staff in public services to neighbours helps ensure people with dementia receive understanding, respect, and practical support in everyday life. 💙

Here are 5 tips on caring for your loved one with Alzheimer’s. 🤝⬇️

🛡️ Create a safe environment
Remove tripping hazards, lock doors exiting the property and ensure potentially harmful items like scissors and knives are kept out of reach.

🗣️ Communicate clearly
Use direct and simple language. Speak slowly, maintain eye contact and give your loved one time to respond.

🔄 Establish a routine
Create a consistent daily routine that’s easy to follow. Familiarity can help reduce anxiety and confusion.

🕊️ Encourage independence
Only assist with tasks when necessary. Encourage your loved one to do what they can on their own to maintain a sense of independence.

🥰 Take care of yourself too!
Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s can be overwhelming. Make sure to seek support, take breaks and look after your own wellbeing.

Our Story

We aim to help and support those who have a wide range of memory difficulties and to ensure the highest standards of care and attention for those participating in our research programmes. We are the only centre in Scotland which has conducted research on all of the currently licensed treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. The benefit of identifying Prodromal Alzheimer’s disease means there is an opportunity for early intervention for example with a vaccine or new medicine. We also run studies for people who already have an established diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. It is now generally accepted that people who do come forward and participate in research have better overall outcomes.
