Frames make you look good but lenses make you see well
Frames may get all the attention, but it’s the lenses that make the biggest difference to your vision. Here are some of the options we offer to tailor your glasses to your lifestyle:
🔵 Single vision - perfect for everyday wear, whether that’s distance, reading, or screen use.
🔵 Varifocals - smooth, seamless vision at all distances, with no need to swap between pairs.
🔵 Occupational lenses - designed for computer work, helping reduce eye strain and improve posture.
🔵 Thin and light lenses - more comfortable, especially for higher prescriptions, with a slimmer look.
🔵 Photochromic (light-reactive) lenses - these darken outdoors and are clear indoors, perfect for changeable weather.
🔵 Anti-reflection and blue light filters - reduce glare, improve comfort, and help with night driving or long screen hours.
🔵 Polarised sunglass lenses - cut glare and give sharper vision outdoors. Ideal for driving or holidays.

Your lifestyle is unique, and your lenses should be too. Ask us which options would suit you best at your next appointment.

Let’s talk about something just as important as vision, hearing health.
Hearing loss can happen gradually, and many people don’t realise they’re missing out on the sounds of life, conversations, music, laughter, and more.

Regular hearing checks are just as important as sight tests as early detection makes a big difference. You can now visit us for both examinations so it is more convenient than ever.

Whether you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, or just haven’t had it checked in a while, this week is the perfect time to start.

⭐ We’ve been shortlisted! ⭐
We’re absolutely thrilled to share that McLeish Eyecare has been nominated and shortlisted for the Scottish Optometry Awards!

Bringing together Montgomery Optometrists and IJ McLeish Opticians into one new home has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Seeing our team and patients unite under the McLeish Eyecare name in our beautiful new space has been a true highlight.

Our success over the past year is a proud reflection of the strength of independent business, and as the only independent practice in Musselburgh, this recognition means so much to us.

We’re excited for what’s ahead, and being named Independent Practice of the Year would be an amazing honour for our whole community.

🤞 Fingers crossed for the awards next month!

Did you know cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss worldwide?
Cataracts can make your vision cloudy, like looking through a frosted window. The good news: they are treatable, and regular eye exams help us monitor changes so we can advise you at the right time.

A simple check-up could make all the difference. Everyone should have their eyes examined at least every two years and more frequently if advised, or immediately if you notice an issue or change in your vision.

Please don’t delay in booking your eye examination.

🪞Mirror, Mirror, Whit’s Gawn On?

We often get some lovely messages from patients who have been in but this week one patient stole the show! Shona recently began wearing contact lenses for the first time. She shares her story below to give others hope, if they too reach a stage in life where glasses aren’t cutting it. But the best thing is, she also wrote us a poem! What a talented lady. We love it and it has given us endless entertainment this week so we thought we’d share it in the hope of making someone else smile today.

Worried that her glasses, prescribed by another optician, weren’t doing the trick, Shona booked in. She said “A friendly and thorough eye check later, Mr Montgomery confirmed that there was a noticeable difference in the few months from April to September. He asked if I’d ever considered contacts and I explained they’d never been offered as an option so – having chatted everything through – we decided it was time to give them a go! A few weeks later it was back to the practice for a session with Emma to train in how to put them in and take them out (I wasn’t very good on the day!); how to clean them and store them and most importantly – best practice to ensure eye health.

“Well I love them! I’ve had the initial scary experience when I looked in the mirror for the first time and wondered who was looking back at me!

“For me, contacts haven’t been all plain sailing – but the wonderful thing is that whenever I’ve had a worry or a question or needed reassurance – the amazing team at McLeish Eyecare have been there. They're a wonderful team of supportive and encouraging individuals. In the knowledge that millions of folks across the world use contacts (my 30 year old niece from 12 years of age) I will be persevering! I am determined to master the in and out technique so that I can enjoy fabulous vision for years to come.”

👁️If you want to find out more about contact lenses, please pop in, or call us on 0131 665 2876.

💻How to make sure your eyes are screen smart
One in four UK adults are now spending 14 hours or more a day on screens. With such high levels of screen-time it’s important we’re all aware of the impact this can have on our eye health and understand some simple steps we can take to minimise the effects.

Looking at screens won’t permanently damage your eyes; however, it may cause eye strain, headaches, and trigger episodes of visual stress. These reactions to prolonged screen use are commonly known as ‘screen fatigue’ and while symptoms tend to subside after resting your eyes, screen fatigue can be uncomfortable and frustrating.

Extended screen time can also make symptoms of existing eye conditions such as uncorrected myopia (short-sightedness) more pronounced.

Symptoms associated with staring at a screen for long stretches without taking breaks can include:
• Tired eyes.
• Headaches and concentration difficulties.
• Blurred vision.
• Dry eyes.

Minimise the effects
Measure the distance between your face and your device to prevent your eyes working too hard. The 1, 2, 10 method is a good rule of thumb. Keep phone screens 1 foot (about 30 cm) away from your face, laptops and monitors 2 feet away (65cm+) and TVs 10 feet (3.3 metres).

Refresh your eyes by consciously blinking. Your blink rate can fall by as much as 60% when looking at a screen; leaving them prone to dry eye. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water too.

For an instant refresh try closing your eyes and rolling your eyeball around behind the closed lid.

Give your eyes a rest by following the 20-20-20 rule. Look away from your screen every twenty minutes, for 20 seconds and focus on something 20 feet away. You should also break up screen time by spending time outdoors. A couple of hours outdoor activity a day can help counter eye strain caused by focusing on close work such as staring at screens or reading.

We hope these tips help prevent issues associated with prolonged time on screens.
