At the National Interprofessional Education Forum hosted by Cardiff Metropolitan University, we explored how interprofessional learning can enrich students’ experiences and strengthen the future healthcare workforce.

By building awareness and embedding interprofessional learning activity, students not only develop a broader skill set but also gain a deeper understanding of how collaboration across professions leads to more integrated, effective, and patient-centred care.

This month, we were proud to welcome Carys Edmunds and Hannah Thomas, student physiotherapists from University of South Wales for a four-week pilot leadership placement, an exciting first for HEIW👏

Practice-based learning involves hands on experience that helps develop essential skills, enhance the quality of care, and support professional growth through real world application and reflection.

This experience offered an excellent opportunity to highlight how HEIW positively influences the NHS workforce through its focus on education and training.

During their placement, Carys and Hannah:
👉 created Allied Health Professionals (AHP) career profiles to highlight inspiring journeys into mental health and support mental health workforce attraction
👉 explored compassionate leadership, reflecting on what it means for their future practice, patient care and professional growth
👉and they provided a valued student voice to programme development across HEIW.

“This placement gave us the chance to grow as future leaders, understand the bigger picture of workforce development, and see how compassionate cultures shape patient care.”

We wish them every success in their future careers as physiotherapists and healthcare leaders of tomorrow.

To help guide you, we have developed a raising concerns toolkit ➡ https://heiw.nhs.wales/support/raising-concerns-and-speaking-up-safely/raising-concerns-toolkit-students/

We understand raising a concern is not an easy thing to do, but it is so important. We hope the toolkit helps you understand the importance of this and helps you feel comfortable, confident and able to speak up safely.
