If you are unable to safely get your worm egg counts tested, there are still measures we can be taking to reduce the need for anthelmintic treatment. Pasture management is critical to reducing the need for anthelmintic treatment - B&W Equine Vets get it:

Now is the time to get your horse's spring worm egg count done, but did you know that there are things you can do to help reduce your horse’s worm burden?
Pasture management is key. Removing droppings on a regular basis, not overstocking pasture, rotating/resting paddocks and grazing paddocks with other livestock, such as sheep, will help reduce egg contamination on the pasture.

Please be advised that due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic the University of Liverpool has had to temporarily suspend the equine parasitology service Diagnosteq.

In order to prioritize the health and welfare of staff and students and concentrate available resources to COVID-19 research, we are at present, unable to accept any parasitology samples for testing. During this period we will be trying our best to redirect any samples that do make it through to us to similar labs that are able to remain open. We are sorry if this results in an extended wait for test results.

It is still possible to discuss your test results, if you wish to discuss results please contact Prof Jane Hodgkinson on jhodgkin@liv.ac.uk. For lab/sample progress enquiries please contact Mark Dowling (markd@liv.ac.uk)

If you have particular welfare concerns about horses under your care, that can’t wait until after government restrictions on social distancing are lifted, and require urgent tapeworm, cyathostomin (small strongyle/redworm), fluke or pinworm testing please get in touch and we can discuss alternative testing arrangements.

We would like to thank you for your custom over many years and we hope we will be in position to continue offering our diagnostic service to you in the future. Until that time we wish you all the best at this at difficult time.

Best Regards
The Diagnosteq Technical team
