Lincoln’s High Bridge, built around 1160, stands on the site where Roman Ermine Street once crossed the River Witham.

It is the oldest surviving bridge in Britain still supporting buildings, with timber-framed shops added around 1550.

A chapel to St Thomas the Martyr once stood on the bridge before being replaced by an obelisk water conduit in the 18th century.

The river arch below, once nicknamed the “Murder Hole,” later gained the brighter title “The Glory Hole.”

Restored in 1902–03 under architect William Watkins, the bridge’s buildings were returned to their original half-timbered design.
