At the age of 12 I saw a team mate wearing a metallic blue bodysuit. She looked so graceful and elegant! I wanted one too. A few weeks later my mum bought me a metallic green one. I was so happy. Went to the training hall and walked out of the changing room feeling like a million bucks. My coach looked me up and down and said “what are YOU wearing?” That same day we got lined up to be picked for the group and individual routines. My coach kept looking from beginning to end of the line and started calling the names. I finally heard my name for the group. I always had wanted to do both. I was disappointed. She saw it on my face too. Then she added “some of us should be watching what we are eating and be grateful that we are in a group routine”. I looked it the mirror and saw myself in that stupid metallic green body suit and felt shame and embarrassment. That was the last time I wore a body suit, about 31 years ago. Today, I’m honouring that 12 year old. Not because I’m thinner or fitter, because I’m not, but because I think she looked beautiful and no one should made her feel ashamed for what she looked like.
By the way, my new bodysuit is not only elegant and beautiful but also so soft and comfy!!!
