Our body has a natural response to potential danger called fight or flight. It's like an alarm system that releases chemicals to help us fight off the danger or run away from it. It's an important mechanism.
However, nowadays, when we face things like viruses, traumas, injuries, or stress, we can get stuck in this fight or flight mode for too long. And that's not good for us.
You see, if we stay in this mode for extended periods - days, weeks, months, or even years - our body finds it harder to recover and heal from injuries and illnesses. It can even lead to chronic illnesses. So it's crucial to be aware of the signs that indicate we might be stuck in this mode.
Here are five signs to look out for:
Firstly, you may find it difficult to relax - perhaps you find you always want to be doing something.
Secondly, you might feel exhausted much of the time, and just to make matters worse, your sleep might also be disrupted.
Thirdly, you might lose your appetite or have trouble digesting food.
Fourthly, you may have a short fuse and get easily irritated.
Lastly, you might notice that you crave stressful situations so you can get a quick shot of energy to get things done, which is a bit counterintuitive.
And, as a bonus, you may find yourself with ‘unexplained’ pain in your body.
Many people believe that a holiday, a massage, meditation, breathwork, cold showers, and other activities can help switch our nervous system into rest and restore mode. While these practices can be helpful, they might not always be powerful enough on their own.
