5 Signs Your Nervous System is in Fight or Flight Mode

Our body has a natural response to potential danger called fight or flight. It's like an alarm system that releases chemicals to help us fight off the danger or run away from it. It's an important mechanism.

However, nowadays, when we face things like viruses, traumas, injuries, or stress, we can get stuck in this fight or flight mode for too long. And that's not good for us.

You see, if we stay in this mode for extended periods - days, weeks, months, or even years - our body finds it harder to recover and heal from injuries and illnesses. It can even lead to chronic illnesses. So it's crucial to be aware of the signs that indicate we might be stuck in this mode.

Here are five signs to look out for:

Firstly, you may find it difficult to relax - perhaps you find you always want to be doing something.

Secondly, you might feel exhausted much of the time, and just to make matters worse, your sleep might also be disrupted.

Thirdly, you might lose your appetite or have trouble digesting food.

Fourthly, you may have a short fuse and get easily irritated.

Lastly, you might notice that you crave stressful situations so you can get a quick shot of energy to get things done, which is a bit counterintuitive.

And, as a bonus, you may find yourself with ‘unexplained’ pain in your body.

Many people believe that a holiday, a massage, meditation, breathwork, cold showers, and other activities can help switch our nervous system into rest and restore mode. While these practices can be helpful, they might not always be powerful enough on their own.

I've had many clients who have experienced deep relaxation and improvement in sleep, digestion, concentration, and pain levels after our sessions together. It's something that builds up over time.

Do you ever feel like you’re too caught up in your own thoughts and feelings? Like they’re always changing and making you feel bad? That’s what being mind-full means. It means you forget who you really are, which is a peaceful and happy person. It means you listen to your personal mind, which is always limited, insecure and fearful. Being mind-FULL gets you stuck and frazzled.
Thing is, you can always change that. You can always go from being mind-full to being MINDFUL. How? By realizing that your thoughts are not you. They’re just things that you make up and experience in your awareness. You can always let them go and come back to your natural state of calm and joy.

Do you ever catch yourself uttering those words, "My body's wrecked" or "I must be getting old"?

It's a common refrain we hear all too often. Some doctors may tell you it's just a natural part of aging, advising you to accept it, shed some pounds, and rely on painkillers.

But let me tell you something, it truly frustrates me that we've been led to believe this narrative!

Think about it: "Oh, I'm just a wreck!" Does that ring a bell?

I understand that it might feel that way at times, but the truth is, it's rarely the whole picture. Yet, in all my years of assisting people, this is a popular belief I come across.

Sure, we often say it in jest, but here's the thing: your subconscious mind starts to internalise it as truth.

Now, here's the real truth... more often than not...

💜Either you've healed from an injury and no longer resemble a wreck, but you could use some extra support to iron out the lingering kinks,

💜Or, perhaps you were never really wrecked in the first place; you might simply have imbalanced muscles or an imbalanced immune system.

✨Maybe you feel like you've transformed into a wreck? Well, have you ever considered the possibility of transforming out of it?

Let me tell you, your body possesses an incredible ability to heal itself—it's downright magical! 🦄 All we need to do is remove the obstacles holding it back.

When you speak negatively about your body, you inadvertently bring yourself down and start believing that you'll never be better than this, that it's all downhill from here.

But you can take pride in and appreciate your body while actively aiding its healing process.

To me, my body is the most precious thing. It empowers me to venture out and relish life, and it keeps me present for the people around me!

Always remember, your body yearns to feel better and function optimally. It wants to work efficiently, conserving energy for all the other incredible things you want to do. 🔥😀

Google didn't have the answer..

So I thought, as an experiment, I would do a quick search on Google.
I searched “why do my hips ache”, and after clicking on every website on the whole of the 1st page of results, here is what I found..

🤔Some said it could be from overuse or a muscle strain from exercise (a point to them)

🤔Only one said it could be referred pain from, for example, the lower back (definitely a point to them)

🤔One said, very generally, that it could be something to do with muscles, ligament, tendons, or nerves (so, a point to them too)

🤔One said a hip fracture..????!!

🤔Some even said the most likely causes could be rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, age-related changes, FAI (impingement), or a labral tear (so in Eurovision style: nil points to them for being unhelpful and creating worry)
**By the way, age-related changes are normal and shouldn’t hurt.**

🤔But the most common suggestion - over and over again - was that it was most likely osteo-arthritis!
Perhaps unsurprisingly, these were the private orthopaedic surgery sites.
So, 10 points deduction for them, because they didn’t make it clear enough, in my opinion, that this generally only applies in some very long-term, un-dealt-with cases, and is SO unhelpful.

🤔But NONE of them mentioned it could be a weak or underused muscle (tut tut)

✨The most common reasons for achy or sore hips are:
1. Muscles and tendons - whether tight, weak, or injured
2. A locked or inflamed sacral joint in the lower back.

💚The moral of the story.. Be careful what you read on t’internet!

And if you do have an achy or sore hip, comment below or message me to see if I can help you quickly step out with confidence again.

My Story

Sarah Court BSc(Hons) BTAA, CNHC Registered, Member BAUK.

I qualified in (the amazing) Bowtech - the original Bowen Technique, back in 2005 and have since undertaken the following courses: Specialised Bowen Procedures (I & II), Back Practitioner and Back Pain and Assessment. I regularly use my biology degree qualification and background in the private healthcare industry to better understand what may be going on within your whole body. I have helped many people with many different health concerns, even eradicating them. Your health and wellbeing is important to me.
