There are many reports documenting Rosemary essential oil (rosemarinus officinalis) as being anti-oxidant, and also having a significant antibacterial and anti-viral potential against viruses, for example Covid and flu.

These properties have also been recognised by other industries such as the food industry, using rosemary as a natural preservative and the beauty industry in their skin care products.

Rosemary essential oil is also great for uplifting one's emotions, promoting positivity and self-belief. When you next pick a sprig of rosemary from the garden or buy some to use in the Sunday roast, have a good sniff, and see if you experience that zing of energy and uplifting of the mood 🙂

Rosemary essential oil must be used with caution though. It should not be used during pregnancy, or if diagnosed with high blood pressure or epilepsy. Always refer to a professional aromatherapist for the safe use of essential oils.

A piquant sciency read for those who love science:-

Cinnamomum verum or C. zeylanicum (aka cinnamon.)

With it's anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties, this stimulating essential oil can help boost and maintain the immune system. Cinnamon essential oil is powerfully antiseptic, and can be used to ease coughs and colds and help prevent viruses from spreading. Add to a diffuser to help kill airborne bacteria and relieve cold symptoms. Blend with eucalyptus, niaouli, ravensara and tea tree essential oils for a super ninja bug-busting concoction. Cinnamon, also tonic to mind and body, can help to bring about some "get up and go" to any feelings of lethargy. With it's warming properties, it's ideal to use in a massage blend for aching joints and muscles.

Cinnamon leaf oil is mostly used in aromatherapy as the bark is a skin irritant and must be used with care. As always, seek the advise of a professional aromatherapist for safe use of essential oils.

Spicy sciency bit:- Cinnamon extracts, essential oils, and their compounds have been reported to inhibit bacteria by damaging cell membrane; altering the lipid profile; inhibiting ATPases, cell division, membrane porins, motility, and biofilm formation; and via anti-quorum sensing effects.

January seems like the perfect time to share with you some of the best essential oils for detoxing after the Christmas excesses. I'll be focusing on their anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties, and their ability to uplift the mood and bring inspiration to the start of the new year, and help to pursue those goals.

Today, we’ll start with the citrus essential oils (EOs) grapefruit (C. paradisi) and lemon (C. limon). They are highly effective when used in detox massage blends, helping to stimulate the lymphatic system in the elimination of toxins/unwanted by-products. They have an antiseptic and antiviral action that can be used to protect against coughs and colds. Add to a diffuser to help kill airborne bacteria and prevent germs from spreading throughout the family or at work. Grapefruit can help maintain concentration and focus as well, so great for study or the work commute. For those of you who are doing "dry January", did you know grapefruit is indicated for being a good hangover cure?! In addition, with a cleansing and balancing effect on the emotional system, they can really lift the spirits when feeling down, or experiencing nervous exhaustion and depressive states such as SAD.

The juicy sciency bits:- Antibacterial tests show that citrus EOs grapefruit and lemon have good selective antibacterial activity, lemon being the best of the citrus oils. Similarly, lemon exhibits the best scavenging ability for free radicals and therefore an effective anti-oxidant. Although the main compound of grapefruit and lemon is d-limonene, the selective antibacterial and antioxidant activity may not be primarily attributed to the d-limonene, but a combined action with their other compounds.

Always refer to a professional aromatherapist for safe use of essential oils.
