If you’re finding this time of year heavy, you’re not alone.

Christmas adverts are everywhere… lights are going up… people are talking about plans, gifts, and gatherings.

But for many of us, grief tells a different story.

Maybe you’re missing someone.

Maybe life feels nothing like it used to.

Maybe you’re grieving a loss that isn’t always recognised - health, identity, a relationship, financial stability, or a version of yourself you thought you’d still have.
If any of that resonates, please know this:

There is nothing wrong with you. Your grief is valid. Your pace is valid. Your experience is valid.

Grief Awareness Week is a gentle reminder that you don’t have to pretend you’re “fine” or carry everything alone.

Sometimes being around people who simply get it is enough.

This week, Inner Light Wellbeing is hosting two Life After Loss events - calm, creative, and welcoming spaces for anyone who needs support, grounding, or connection.

As we move into December, many people begin to feel the weight of Christmas long before the day arrives.

One of the most common questions I hear is:

“Is it normal to not want to celebrate at all?”

And the truth is - yes, it absolutely is.

When you’re grieving, the festive season can intensify everything you’re already carrying. The lights, music, family pressures, and constant reminders of togetherness can highlight the absence of what, or who, is missing. There is nothing wrong with you for struggling.

As an expert by experience, here are some gentle strategies that may support you this month:

1. Give yourself permission to step back
You do not have to “join in” if your heart isn’t there. Protect your energy, not other people’s expectations.

2. Set boundaries where you need them
It’s OK to keep plans minimal, decline invitations, or let people know you’re taking things day by day.

3. Create comforting, private rituals
Light a candle, write a message to your loved one, take a slow walk, or choose one thing that feels grounding.

4. Choose connection on your own terms
A single supportive conversation can be more helpful than forcing yourself into crowded gatherings.

5. Feel your feelings without judgement

You are not failing Christmas - Christmas is simply hard when your heart is hurting.
If December is feeling heavy, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

I’m hosting Life After Loss Events this week - a safe, compassionate space where you can learn coping strategies, feel understood, and connect with others moving through similar experiences.

Calm, creative, and welcoming spaces for anyone who needs support, grounding, or connection.

Why does Christmas feel so painful, even years after a loss?

Because loss changes how we experience the world - not just when it happens, but long after.

Whether it’s the loss of a person, a relationship, your health, or the version of you that once was…Christmas can bring those memories and emotions back to the surface.

This isn’t a setback - it’s your heart remembering.

Be gentle with yourself this season. Redefine what Christmas means for you, now, and give yourself permission to move through it in your own way.

If this time of year feels heavy, you don’t have to carry it alone.

I hated Christmas too…

I know what it feels like to dread Christmas, after loss.

Everyone else seemed excited… and I just felt empty.

The lights were too bright, the noise was too much, and all I wanted was somewhere I could just be without pretending I was okay.

That’s why I created Life After Loss. It’s the space I wish I had - calm, gentle, and filled with people who truly understand what it means to navigate December with a grieving heart.

In these sessions, we slow down. We breathe. We create.

You can talk, stay quiet or just be present, if that’s what you need.
And together, we find small moments of light again.

If Christmas feels heavy this year, come join us in Cramlington or Blyth.
You don’t have to carry this alone. I’m here, and so are others who get it.”

When Christmas Doesn’t Feel Merry...

At our Blyth support group this week, we spoke about how to be in the present moment - and one topic that came up time and time again was the fear of Christmas.

For many, the run-up to Christmas means lights, laughter, and plans.

But for others - especially those living with loss - it can stir up very different emotions.

Loss isn’t just about bereavement.
It can be the loss of health, identity, friendship, a relationship, financial stability, or even a sense of purpose.

When the world tells us to “be joyful”, it can feel isolating, confusing, and painful.

You might find yourself avoiding gatherings, feeling guilty for not being “festive enough”, or missing someone or something that once made this time of year special.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone - and you don’t have to face it alone either.

During Grief Awareness Week (first week of December), Inner Light Wellbeing CIC invites you to ‘Life After Loss’ - a gentle, in-person event offering calm, creativity, and connection.

What to expect:
Creative Therapy
Sharing Circle
Meditation & Breathing
Messages to the Stars
Healthy Snacks & Refreshments

Cramlington – Warm Space, Manor Walks
Thursday 4th December 2025 | 9am – 11.30am

Blyth – Briardale House
Friday 5th December 2025 | 10am – 1pm

Let this season be less about pretending and more about healing.

💔 Grief doesn’t have an expiry date

Even after 12 years, I still miss you so much, Paul.

Today always takes me right back to that devastating day we lost you - like a wave that knocks the breath out of me all over again.

Grief really is a rollercoaster, isn’t it?

Some days I can smile at the memories, and other days, like today, it just hurts so deeply. It feels like forever since I last saw you, and that ache never truly fades.

For anyone else who’s missing someone today - please know you’re not alone in that pain.

Grief doesn’t follow a timeline or a rulebook.

It changes, it softens, but it never fully leaves.

Always in my thoughts, big brother ❤️
My two heavenly angels love you both always!
