Barbara was able to build on her medical training to finally reverse the decline in her health!

“I am so very grateful for all your advice and reassurance over the program, helping me tremendously to feel much more confident in dealing with this metabolic disorder. After all these years of slow painful decline and concern it is so gratifying to be back in the control and feel and look better.

With a medical background I could not understand why my health issues had been deteriorating so much – abdominal bloating, digestive disorders, weight gain, low energy, sleep problems and aching muscles and joints.

But I am now able to sleep naturally for the first time in 7-8 years! My energy levels are very good and my aching joints have subsided. My abdominal bloating is drastically reduced and family and friends have all noted how much better I look. I am now in my late 70's but feel much younger and able to enjoy a more energetic lifestyle!”

ESSENTIAL BIOMEASURES INSIGHT

The potential for success using this set of home measurements is phenomenal.

Knowing how resting pulse, body temperature (and others such as urine pH and blood sugars) can help understand our physiology and metabolism is one of the most valuable insights I can coach my clients.

In this case study we actually relied on them for quite a lot of insight and understanding of how the body was functioning. Sometimes, we don't have the privilege of all the markers we want and we don't let that stop us digging and progressing.

The underarm temperature here is far too low.
The Resting Pulse 'could' be too low too for optimal metabolic health.

I learned and then honed these markers and interpretations from some great teachers. And for our clients and any individual who knows how to use them they can impact their wellbeing for decades!

Not just to solve a health challenge or two. But to track wellbeing and on the prevention side of things too.

Of all the topics we’ve studied in Nutrition, there are some we had to go searching for, drag to the surface and create a platform for.

No wonder it took so long to find gold! 😉

Comment ‘MY NUTRITION’ for the recorded webinar.

20/01/2026

….. well the session wasn’t actually that intense 😀. Remained quite calm really.

Thank you to the Newcastle folks who took time out of their Friday to get clear on their Nutrition!

Comment ‘MY NUTRITION’ to be notified of the recorded webinar availability.

NEXT UP - 4-Week Course on 'How to Individualise Your Nutrition:

We're building up to this event that starts in a couple of weeks time.

Imagine quantifying the amount of resources that go into someone's effort around Nutrition.

It's often a huge investment (time, money, energy, education, environment, routine etc).

Yet - there's a weird disconnect here. Is the size of this investment actually proportional to the outcome?

If not, why not? What is clunky and inefficient about it? Is it even accurate for our needs?

Unfortunately - Effort will not guarantee that it's actually what our body needs.

We see 'individualisation' as a way to help make that a wise investment.

This course is for anyone who is finding this tricky. That no matter how much nutrition and dietary advice you follow, it just doesn't stick. And the more effort and resources you invest, the more confusing and it gets.

Work with us for 4 weeks and we'll coach you what we know about individualising your nutrition.

We'll not be using labs in this instance. We'll focus on and leveraging what goes before all that.

Turning a Triangle upside down!
And what nobody seems to have noticed!

This has been quite interesting hasn’t it. The new US nutrition/dietary guidelines (Eat Real Food) were released and there has been an understandably huge response, from all sides.

A simple image and statement has the capacity to reverberate through and across all areas and industries from health to politics to agriculture and on.

There are many worthy discussions to have of course. But the initial reaction seems to be missing at least one important point!

I’ve seen so many nutritionists and dieticians picking it apart food by food and painstakingly providing scientific references per point. Don't get me wrong, there's a place for all that. And there's no lack of opportunity to anyone who wants to do so.

Fair enough, but that all seems a little misplaced or a bit off when you ACTUALLY look at the image they are critically analysing.

Take another look at this new food guide 👀

The fact that it is a triangle is completely arbitrary from a nutritional point of view! Why has NOBODY mentioned this yet?

It is literally a selection of food images arranged into a triangle shape 😆

Tell me that this couldn’t just be click n’ dragged into a circle or a square 😂

There is nothing ‘quantifiable’ about the use of a triangle here.

The use of a 🔺and simply inverting it 🔻is purely a symbol (at this stage).

It’s making a point. A take-down. Very effectively. It’s a direct challenge to the old school food guide pyramid. An image says a thousand words, etc.

Beyond that - as a nutritional statement - the triangle is completely irrelevant.

Now take another look.

The furore and clammer to analyse the prescriptive side of this with nutritional science authority is bordering on bizarre. Helping to provide clarity? Or not helping?

This idea that there is too much of one thing and food group and not enough of the other - seems suspiciously like an exercise in major confirmation bias!

Where in this image can these conclusions be drawn from? SERIOUSLY. If you look at the surface area that the different food groups take up they pretty much take up the same surface area of the triangle!! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Am I really the only one who has noticed this?

It’s simply a GENERAL list of foods arranged into a triangle. It's quite a broad range. Fairly sensible in generic terms...... and that's about it (nutritionally).

The grains take up the same space as the vegetables. There are as much space taken by fruits as there is meat and fish. And so on!

Who is seeing it any differently?

Even this is far too much analysis!

Who is arguing that there is not enough of this or that when the broccoli 🥦 image is enlarged and bigger than the chicken/turkey 🍗 🧐

Nutritional Analysis based on Pixels!!

Debating based on clipart?! What on earth is going on?!

Who or whatever designed this image is chuckling…….

Again - Don’t get me wrong. This is a fascinating and important shift. It’s relevant and real and worthy of discussion and understanding.

But - what a bizarre response and example of human perception and psychology.

Is it me or is this not also (alongside the politics and legislation etc) just a GENERAL list of a range of real, whole foods.

I wouldn’t go beyond that. Is it right or wrong? I prefer to work from the individual level. That’s my remit. And this ‘triangle’ doesn’t deliver on that because it isn’t designed to.

Thoughts?

Client Case Study >>>
HIGH TSH BUT LIMITED THYROID PANEL
Full Case Study here: https://functionalhealthclinic.co.uk/case-study-nicki-going-from-extremes-to-mastery/

“TSH is made by the pituitary gland, a tiny organ located below the brain and behind the sinus cavities. It is part of the body’s feedback system to maintain stable amounts of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in the blood.”

We see this so often. A really limited Thyroid Panel. The TSH marker just doesn’t give enough of the picture of Thyroid function. Especially if you want to identify and differentiate between Autoimmune Thyroiditis or Non-Autoimmune Functionally Decreased Thyroid Function.

The Thyroid is known as the gland of ‘metabolism’. Our metabolic rate and therefore ability of each cell to function is directly related to the function of the thyroid.

In this client case this was a significant finding given some of Nicki's related symptoms and patterns – fatigue, anaemia, difficulty losing weight, digestive disruption, mood challenges and more.

Ideally and usually (and again, if Nicki had required more in depth investigation), we would have wanted to do some deeper digging. We’d have wanted to run a more comprehensive Thyroid Panel that included markers such as:

T4
Free T4
T3
Free T3
Reverse T3
TPO Antibodies
ThyroGlobulin Antibodies

Furthermore, it is important to analyse other physiological factors that are related to the thyroid, which may include:

Liver function – the conversion of T4 to T3 takes place primarily in the liver.
Oxidative stress – a decrease in glutathione status can impact T3 synthesis.
HPA stress hormone balance – fluctuations in stress hormones.
Intestinal immune function: microbial balance, food intolerance, intestinal permeability.
Various nutrient deficiencies: B-12, B-6, zinc, selenium, iodine, glutathione, tyrosine.

We work pretty hard to be all the things Ervin complements us on here.... 😬

“I’ve been working with Jack for a while and he’s helped me make significant improvements to my health. I decided to begin the program due to severe exhaustion and fatigue that didn’t improve with sleep or rest. It was a very frightening condition to experience and I was forced to stop working.

I went to many Doctors and did many tests, but no one had any idea as to what might be going on. Jack’s program offered hope for me in the form of a pathway to help my body heal. The process of healing has been a lengthy one, but I feel significantly better now.

I feel a great deal of it has to do with Jack’s ability to guide the healing process, which is something that regular Doctors simply weren’t able to do. The health care system, at least in the US, is not designed to work in such a way. I’m grateful that I was able to find and work with Jack.

There are many great things about Jack’s approach. First, his guidance is not based on guessing – it’s based on running assessments to achieve insight on metabolic function. The added benefit of this approach is that the assessments can be repeated after a certain time to gauge progress. These tests are incredibly detailed and I believe, not tests I could do with my regular Doctor.

Jack is very knowledgeable about human biochemistry and how metabolism works. I always thought that I knew a good deal about this, but Jack’s knowledge of how it can be optimized, is probably well beyond that of many other experts. Jack is also very thorough and patient with his explanations and he can go into as much detail as one likes. After having worked with Jack, I wish that the family Doctors that I’ve had throughout my life were as knowledgeable, thorough, and meticulous as he’s been.”

There are two distinct sides to this particular client work.

Yes, its absolutely fantastic, we worked with Robert and he achieved some great results. A wonderful outcome for him and his family. Part of my mind just wants to stick with this part.

But his success and testimonial has always left me also focussing on the 'for the past 24 years' part.......

That is a really, really long time to have been living with an inflammatory bowel condition and everything that comes with it.

And the question is did it have to be for that long? It's a rhetorical question in many ways.

But the point is that we truly didn't apply anything particularly spectacular, advanced or novel in his program.

There were some interesting parts as we leveraged the functional medicine and so on, but it was all relatively simple in principle.

That's not taking anything away from what Robert did and applied and what he managed to galvanise into action.

But there's a feeling of unease in that the nutrition and lifestyle steps that he took had in essence and in principle been available to him for the last two decades!

Could the last two decades of his life have been completely different?!

It would almost be more acceptable and less troubling if we had utilised some kind of breakthrough technique and summoned some magical force to achieve the results. In this instance, of course it would feel understandable that Robert would have to wait 24 years in order to improve his health. He just had to meet us on our journey around the world handing out miracle cures!

Of course that's not what happened as this is absurd 😄

But it remains salient that there was such focus, expertise and advanced resources applied to Robert's condition for 24 years without much progress and all along the solutions were not that far away.

Ultimately - to see that Robert achieved great success with his health through relatively simple changes, is brilliant. It highlights and emphasises the potential we have and the opportunity we have when we value the quality of the process.

The quality of the questions we ask.

The How and Why as well as the What.

I think a lot of people are in Robert's position. To them I say, don't underestimate the simple steps and how you are applying the process towards your goals.

Here are the tools in our tool kit

We've worked hard to pull these together and apply them with our client goal at the forefront.

We began (2004) with 'Movement' as the only modality.

We focussed on learning and embracing certain principles that rang true and resonated for us in terms of understanding human movement and it's influence on how the different systems of the body worked.

In essence, not just exercise for exercise sake or movement for movement sake. But how is the whole system-of-systems designed in conjunction with it's capacity for movement.

That's what we found fascinating. The principles of human function (how the body works) coming first and the 'movement therapy and exercise conditioning' coming second.

In 2008 we made the decision to add more skills and modalities.

But there was a pause. At that point I realised I didn't just want a list of different therapies that I could do.

The modalities and therapies were not to take the limelight. The idea was not to just have a menu of this-for-that. That would feel too disconnected and as if it was all about the modality first and client and their needs and goals second.

Instead, the aim was to ensure that any new modality could bring to the table 4 things:

- Resonate with and Build the understanding of the principles of human function.
- Be applied in a way that considers the whole person/body as a system-of-systems.
- Integrate practically together and be delivered alongside accompanying modalities.
- Can it be part of a coherent teaching and coaching program.
- Be of huge value to the clients we work with and their specific health challenges.

Has it been perfect? Has it been clunky at times? Has there been perfect integration? Is it easy to market this approach? Is it conventional? Does it have limitations? Does it challenge expectations?

All interesting questions 🤔

One thing it ensures is that what we have built is unique. It will develop further. We know what it is and what it isn't. It is rich with opportunities. Has structure and a framework. And prioritises the capacity and flexibility to individualise the person at the centre. The client.

Have you combined these or other modalities and therapies before?

LOW BLOOD PRESSURE AND IRON STATUS LINK
Full Case Study here: https://functionalhealthclinic.co.uk/case-study-nicki-going-from-extremes-to-mastery/

Once we were equipped with the insight into Nicki's Iron markers we were also in a stronger position to consider drivers and changes that could impact the low blood pressure that Nicki had been experiencing for a long time.

After 6 weeks this was improving to the point that episodes were much less intense and occurring less frequently.

By the end of the program her low blood pressure was alleviated completely.

Whether this was all related to the relationship with iron status is difficult to say, as there are so many factors involved. And we don't like to make 'crystal ball' statements. But it certainly appeared to be an important piece of the puzzle.
