Three years ago we had the honour of caring for Georgia and her lovely family. They have very kindly gifted a book for each family currently on the unit. This is the story behind Georgia’s Birthday Book Club…

Our beautiful daughter Georgia was born on Monday 21st November 2022 and spent the first 53 days of her life on Ward 35.
During our stay there, we were very kindly gifted a copy of this book.
In the midst of what was a very worrying and stressful time, we took great pleasure in reading lots of stories to Georgia, but this one became a firm favourite as it always seemed to settle her.
To honour Georgia’s birthday, please accept this copy of ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’. We hope you and your family enjoy it as much as we did, and we wish you all well in your journey on Ward 35.

These books have been gratefully received and families are enjoying reading the story to their baby. Thank you so much 🤍

This is Luca’s Story…

“Luca was born at 24+4 in July 2024 weighing a tiny 720g. At 2 weeks old he was transferred to Ward 35 at the RVI following a ruptured bowel which required emergency surgery.
He stayed on the ward for nearly 4 months, working his way from intensive care to high dependency but then had to go back to intensive care following another bowel rupture and more emergency surgery. He then made it to low dependency and finally home, still on oxygen and with a stoma.
Since being discharged home he’s had further surgeries at the RVI including having his stoma reversed and has now been weaned off the oxygen. He is now 1 year corrected and weighs a healthy 9.2kg!
Luca was incredibly well looked after on ward 35, everyone was not only medically amazing, but kind with both Luca and my husband and I. As Luca’s parents, we cannot thank them enough for keeping our little boy going and getting him home with us!”

💜 A special evening on Newcastle Quayside 💜
Our charity brought together families past and present for a lovely catch-up with Tiny Lives staff and Ward 35 staff. A lovely get together made even more magical by the bridges glowing purple along the Quayside ✨🌉

Here’s a pic of just some who attended with Millennium bridge lit up in the background💜

Today our Ward 35 families received beautiful parent & baby gift packs lovingly put together by a small group of our nursing team. 💜

Each pack included handmade keepsakes created by staff and one of our wonderful supporters, a craft kit for parents to make their own WPD memento, a unit personalised candle, awareness pins, self care treats, and of course a purple miniboo. ✨

Our families were also treated to a relaxing product making session and soothing hand massages hosted by followed by a delicious tea party buffet. 🍰💆‍♀️

A huge thank you to our charity for their continued support & funding, and to for kindly contributing some of the party food and staff freebies! 💜🙏

Each year, a small group of our Ward 35 nursing staff plan events to ensure we make our mark here in Newcastle on World Prematurity Day. 💜

Worldwide, 1 in 10 babies are born preterm. Every year on November 17th, this important day is recognised across the globe. To honour the occasion, iconic buildings and landmarks light up purple and Newcastle is no exception.

Thanks to the support of and the Tyne Bridge and Millennium Bridge, will all be illuminated purple from around 4pm tomorrow.✨

Please tag us in your photos…we’d love to see them! 📸
💜🏙️

Our charity have arranged a meet up for families and staff between 4-7pm. Do pop in if you’re on the quayside to see the bridges lit up. 🌉
