This is great news. After years of campaigning, emergency contraception is now available for free in pharmacies. Previously, it could cost up to £35 to buy over the counter.
Often referred to as ‘the morning after pill’, emergency hormonal contraception can prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after unprotected (pen*s-in-vagina) s*x or where other contraceptive methods may have failed (a split condom, a missed pill etc).
In Newcastle, our Plan B scheme has already meant emergency contraception is available for free from participating pharmacies, but this will mean that all areas in England will offer the same access, not just in pharmacies that are part of the Plan B and other schemes.
