👣 CHILBLAINS 👣
We have started seeing people with chilblains already this season.
They present as red or purple discoloured patches on feet especially toes and can even occur on fingers, ears and the nose.
They can be hot, itchy, very painful and can sometimes ulcerate
They occur when exposed to fluctuations in temperature from very cold to warm
To avoid try to keep your feet and hands at an even temperature and if coming in from the cold don’t warm them up too quickly. Avoid placing on hot water bottles or radiators If possible wear 2 thin layers of socks as this helps to insulate. Keeping legs and ankles warm really helps. Lambs wool insoles in shoes/slippers can help to keep feet warm Use ibuprofen or paracetamol if painful Over the counter chilblain creams can give some relief Don’t scratch the affected areas Chilblains usually clear on their own over a few weeks.
