❗Vasectomy Referrals Update❗

Several practices have flagged ongoing difficulties in successfully referring patients for vasectomy procedures in Derbyshire, which is understandably causing frustration for both patients and clinicians.

Derby and Derbyshire ICB have confirmed that vasectomy services from 2023 to 2026 is at a capped level of 1000 per year.

This service is commissioned from Derbyshire Community Health Services (DCHS) on a block contract basis, whereby, DCHS have subcontracted a number of GP surgeries to deliver the service on an Item of Service basis.

According to official NHS statistics, 1,010 vasectomies were carried out in 2023–24 and we believe it is unlikely, that access to vasectomy services will improve before the next contract review in 2026.

We will however continue to monitor the situation and raise concerns where appropriate.

Find out about vasectomy, including how it is carried out, risks and benefits and getting it on the NHS.

Hi, I'm Dr Kalake, I recently joined Newhall Surgery as a salaried GP working 2 days a week; this will increase to 3 days in January 2026. I obtained my MRCGP in 2024, Master of Surgical Sciences in 2019 and my MBChB in 2009.

I have undertaken clinical positions in both South Africa and the UK having worked in general surgery and breast surgery before deciding to become a GP.

A little about me, I love animals, I enjoy reading and attend a monthly book club with friends where we take turns selecting the book of the month. I volunteer at my local Park Run when I can and have recently started running again with the aim of doing a 10km in December. I am looking forward to joining the Newhall Team for runs in the future, who are, as you will be aware, a 'Park Run Practice'.

I enjoy hiking and recently climbed Ben Nevis, it was very challenging but enjoyable. My favourite hiking places have been the Lake District, Derwent Valley and the Wye Valley.

I am very much looking forward to meeting you all and getting to know the area, having worked most recently in the London.
