This is sort of both a warning and an educational post at the same time.

Unbelievably, it is not a legal requirement to have qualifications in massage therapy in the UK.
it does mean you can't get insurance, but it's not illegal to practice.

When choosing your therapist, please do find out what their qualifications are, because it is SO EASY to further injure people if you don't know what you're doing.

A perfect example today is i had to turn someone away today. As TRAINED sports massage therapists, we know what to look for, we know certain "buzz" words that make us think hmmmm maybe that's not muscular, and we have special tests to do to check these.
The photo shows a simple test we do for back issues, and my client today was positive for this test.

If I had massaged, I could worsen symptoms, caused further injury by compressing nerves, cause tingling, pins and needles and weakness, increase the inflammation and just make things a whole lot worse for her instead of better. What i did instead, was advise her to see her GP as I suspect (i do NOT diagnose) a disc issue. I did the best I could do for my client today by not treating her.

Choose your therapists wisely πŸ˜‰ xx

Erythema!

I love seeing this when massaging, erythema is just increased blood flow to the area being massaged.

It's a great indication of improved circulation and tissue stimulation, which means all that oxygenated blood is rushing to the area, which is a good thing! It means that it is repairing injury on a cellular level, and helps reduce muscle tension.

It's a great visual indication that what you're doing is working!!

The end of the year!

2024 was a thrilling but super scary time for me to start a new business from scratch. To use my qualifications on real people 😱
As 2024 comes to an end and 2025 starts, I just wanted to give a massive shout to you all.

THANK YOU. Thank you for putting your trust in me with your bodies, thank you for your custom, your support and for sticking with me as I navigated a new venture. It honestly means the absolute world to me. I have met some amazing people, I have learned SO much, everyday is a school day as they say, and I continue to strive to be the best therapist I can be going forward.

I can't stop the thanks with you lot though. I have to give a shout out to Mara , Liv and last but not least Hannah . Without you Han, and the rest of the team, I would never have got as far as I have. From plugging me to death on socials, to advice in clinic to putting your trust in me by recommending me to your own clients. You've been amazing and I'm so happy to be a part of our beautiful team in the clinic. You guys πŸ’“

Merry Christmas everyone, here's to a happy, healthy 2025. Xx

The iliotibial (IT) band is a fascinating and unique part of the human body, especially known for its role in movement and stability. Here are some fun facts about it:

1. **It's Not a Muscle**
The IT band is actually a long, thick strip of fascia, not a muscle. Fascia is a type of connective tissue that provides structural support and encases muscles. The IT band runs along the outside of the thigh, from the hip to the shin, helping stabilize the knee and hip during activities like running, walking, and even standing.

2. **One of the Longest Tendons in the Body**
The IT band is one of the longest tendons in the body. It stretches from the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) muscle near the hip and the gluteus maximus to the lateral side of the knee, where it attaches to the tibia.

3. **Key Role in Stabilizing the Knee**
The IT band stabilizes the knee joint, especially during high-impact activities like running, cycling, or hiking. It acts like a giant "seatbelt" for the outer leg, helping absorb impact and maintain balance.

4. **IT Band Syndrome is Common in Runners**
IT band syndrome (ITBS) is a common injury among runners and cyclists. It occurs when the IT band becomes tight or inflamed, often due to overuse, repetitive motions, or inadequate stretching. ITBS usually causes pain on the outside of the knee and can make even walking uncomfortable.

5. **Stretching Can Be Tricky**
Because the IT band is a dense, fibrous tissue, it’s challenging to stretch directly. Stretching exercises usually target the surrounding muscles, like the glutes and TFL, to help alleviate tension and promote flexibility.
