✋Stop chasing “perfect posture.” Posture isn’t the problem. Sedentary behaviour, pain beliefs and poor lifestyle habits are.
The idea that there's one 'perfect posture' is a myth. Human bodies are made to move and not to hold a rigid position all day.
In reality, many people with 'poor posture' have no pain at all. Others with more 'ideal posture' may struggle with pain. Posture is just one piece of a larger puzzle.
Pain is influenced by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors — often referred to as the biopsychosocial model. Here's what your pain is actually linked to:
- lack of movement variety (staying in one position too long)
- stress and fatigue
- sleep quality, nutrition and hydration
- past injuries or poor movement habits
- emotional factors, like anxiety or fear of pain.
Movement > Perfection
Rather than striving for a perfect posture, focus on changing positions often. Take 'movement breaks' throughout the day to prevent joints and muscles from going stiff. Changing positions, stretching, walking, and strengthening your body all help reduce pain.
The takeaway: posture matters, but it's not as important as you may think. Rather than just fixing your posture, you should focus on movement variety, and you will start to see the benefits right away.
