How do you write a book? Since I let it slip that I’m working on The Accidental Ironman, a few people have asked where I find the time — or even how you begin writing a book at all.

The truth is, I didn’t know either. I’ve never written a book before. I’ve written a thesis for an MPhil and a couple of e-books, but this is new territory.

I had an idea, then I just decided to start — and then kept going.
A bit like the Ironman itself. I didn’t know how to do one until I did it.

That’s what the book is really about: responding to life’s events instead of reacting to them. Starting before you feel completely ready. Because most of the best things in life begin that way — uncertain, unprepared, but curious enough to try.

What a day! Yesterday’s Dermoscopy Masterclass was nothing short of inspiring — over 100 enthusiastic delegates came together to learn, share, and elevate our collective skill in skin lesion recognition.

It was an honour to welcome Professor Cliff Rosendahl, whose teaching first sparked my own passion for dermoscopy back in 2013, and Dr Simon Clark, whose depth of knowledge in dermatopathology continues to raise the standard for us all.

The energy in the room, the curiosity, and the conversations reminded me why education in primary care matters so much. Every clinician who learns these skills helps detect skin cancer earlier, and that saves lives.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and shared the day.

This is just the beginning 👊

Spot the Signs: The ABCDE Rule for Melanoma Detection

When checking your skin, remember the ABCDE rule — it could help you catch melanoma early:
A – Asymmetry: One half looks different from the other
B – Border: Edges are irregular, blurred or jagged
C – Colour: Uneven shades of brown, black, red, or even white
D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) or ‘different’ from other lesions
E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, colour, or new symptoms like itching or bleeding

Early detection saves lives — check your skin regularly and see your GP if something doesn’t look right.
