I was driving through The Meadow in Newry last night at 1am and noticed 4 young fellas surrounding what appeared to be an aged, vulnerable and intoxicated gentleman.

I turned around and they flagged me down. It turns out they had been assisting the man to get home for 90 minutes. The man was giving conflicting information, had fallen several times and they weren’t sure how to resolve the situation they had found themselves in.

I want to compliment these 4 lads for the dignified and respectful behaviour they demonstrated by looking after someone who they didn’t know. It’s nice to highlight that there are young people out there who have a healthy community spirit, have morals and are full of integrity.

I phoned 101 and the PSNI arrived 10 minutes later to take the gentleman home.

Someone once said, “When you love someone with dementia you lose them more and more everyday. When they are diagnosed, when they go through different stages, when they go into care and when they die. ‘Rapidly shrinking brain’ is how doctors describe it. As the person’s brain slowly dies, they change physically and eventually forget who their loved ones are. They can eventually become bedridden, unable to move and unable to eat or drink.”
There will be people who will scroll by this message because dementia has not touched them. They may not know what it's like to have a loved one who has fought or is fighting a battle against Dementia.
To raise awareness of this cruel disease, I would appreciate it if my friends could put this on their page for today.
