The calf muscles, also known as the gastrocnemius and soleus, play a crucial role in the movement and stability of the foot and ankle. Tightness in these muscles can lead to a range of foot problems, including pain, discomfort, and reduced flexibility.

One of the most common foot problems associated with tight calf muscles is plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes. When the calf muscles are tight, they can pull on the Achilles tendon, which in turn puts tension on the plantar fascia. This can cause micro-tears in the fascia, leading to pain and inflammation.

In addition to plantar fasciitis, tight calf muscles can also contribute to Achilles tendonitis. When the calf muscles are tight, they can put excessive strain on the Achilles tendon, leading to micro-tears and inflammation.

Tight calf muscles can also lead to metatarsalgia, a condition that causes pain in the ball of the foot. When the calf muscles are tight, they can alter the mechanics of the foot, causing increased pressure on the ball of the foot. This can lead to inflammation and pain in the metatarsal bones.

Another foot problem associated with tight calf muscles is flat feet. When the calf muscles are tight, they can prevent the ankle from flexing properly, which can cause the arches of the feet to collapse. This can lead to pain and discomfort in the feet, as well as problems with balance and stability.

Fortunately, there are several ways to alleviate foot pain caused by tight calf muscles. Stretching is one of the most effective ways to improve flexibility and reduce muscle tightness.

Finally, wearing proper footwear can also help to alleviate foot pain caused by tight calf muscles. Shoes with good arch support and cushioning can help to reduce pressure on the feet and prevent further injury.👟👟👟
Tight calf muscles can cause a range of foot problems, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, metatarsalgia, and flat feet.

👣 Welcome to Feet First Podiatry's Health Blog! Today, let's step into the world of verrucae, a common yet misunderstood foot ailment.

Verrucae, or plantar warts, can be a source of discomfort, but did you know that they aren't always painful or cause for concern? These small growths on the soles of the feet are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and can sometimes go unnoticed. For many, verrucae are more of a psychological nuisance rather than a physical one, as their appearance can be distressing.

However, if your verruca is causing discomfort or embarrassment, you might be considering treatment. Before you dive into options that may be costly or aggressive, there's a simple, safe, and affordable method you can try at home – zinc oxide tape. This tape, when applied daily, can create an environment that discourages the verruca's growth. It's a gentle approach that doesn't risk the pain or potential ulceration associated with salicylic acid treatments or freezing methods.

Research suggests that aggressive treatments like salicylic acid or freezing are effective in less than 30% of cases and can lead to further discomfort. At Feet First Podiatry, we believe in starting with the least invasive methods first. That way, you protect your skin's integrity and avoid unnecessary pain.

If your verruca persists or you're unsure how to proceed, don't worry – Feet First is here to help. We can guide you through a range of treatment options, tailored to your individual needs. Your comfort and foot health is our top priority.

Remember, it's okay to 'wait and see' with verrucae, but if you're ready to take a step towards treatment, start with something simple. For more advice or to book an appointment, visit us at Feet First Podiatry – your partners in foot wellness. 👣

Did you know diabetes affects blood vessels and nerves in the feet? 👣

Patients with diabetes are at greater risk of arterial disease than the general population, this is because raised blood sugar levels over a long period can cause damage to blood vessels in your feet which can lead to reduced blood flow and impaired healing to injury or infection.

All patients with diabetes should have their vascular status assessed regularly depending on their risk category.

From the moment patients enter my clinic, I’m already assessing by watching the way they walk into the room and sit on a chair. I inspect your footwear, hosiery and examine the integrity of your skin for hair growth, colour, texture, temperature, and swelling. Using my fingers I feel for two pulses (Dorsalis Pedis and Posterior Tibialis) on your feet. Then, I’ll use a Doppler ultrasound device to listen to the sounds of the pulses to establish if they are triphasic, biphasic, or monophasic.

Diabetic patients are at an increased risk of diabetic neuropathy which is damage to the nerves on their feet. There are three types of nerve damage that can occur as a complication of poorly controlled diabetes - Motor Neuropathy - which affects foot posture leading to high-pressure areas, Autonomic Neuropathy – which affects sweat and sebaceous glands leading to dry cracked skin and Sensory Neuropathy - which leads to loss of sensation.

Pitted Keratolysis is a bacterial condition affecting the soles of your feet. 👣

The group of bacteria that cause this condition thrive in warm and moist conditions and the odour is caused by the bacteria releasing a sulfur compound.

You are most at risk of developing pitted keratolysis if you have naturally sweaty feet or regularly wear shoes with limited airflow.

It’s most common in people who work in certain occupations where you spend most of the day on your feet such as military personnel, athletes, or farmers.

Symptoms include:
‣ Foul odour.
‣ White areas of damp skin
‣ Tiny pits or patches that look like little holes in the skin.
‣ Itchiness.
‣ In severe cases, pits can form clusters resulting in painful lesions (sores).

Pitted keratolysis isn’t contagious and can’t spread from person to person.

We can diagnose this condition at Feet First Clinic and prescribe a course of treatment as well as provide advice on footwear and general foot health.

If you are experiencing this condition, please don’t suffer - make an appointment today with our highly experienced podiatrist Judith. 🩵

Corns? They aren’t fun.

Corns are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when the skin tries to protect itself against friction or pressure. They often form on feet but they can develop on hands and fingers.

Corns are different from calluses. They are smaller and deeper and have a hard centre surrounded by swollen skin. Hard corns often form on the top of the toes or the outer edge of the small toe. Soft corns tend to form between the toes.

Corns are caused by repeated direct pressure or friction usually over a bony prominence. The most common cause is poorly fitting shoes or foot deformities such as bunions, hammer toes, claw toes, or subluxed joints.

Treatment includes regular surgical debridement, footwear assessment, and offloading devices such as padding, and insoles.

If you suspect you have corn, please book an appointment with us. Call 028 3005 4444 or DM us.
