My turn to reintroduce myself!
I'm Edel, I'm the other half of Newry Therapy Centre. I'm a cognitive behavioural therapist working with children, adolescents and adults.

In addition to my therapeutic work, I have 15+ years supporting neurodivergent children and young people, which is work I love.

And....I'm in the final months of another masters degree, this one in Mental Health for Children and Young People.

We are a few months into our 7th year of Newry Therapy Centre (time flies), so it's time to reintroduce ourselves.

I am Dr Jemma McGourty, a psychologist and psychotherapist working with adults and older adolescents (over 16 years). Alongside my client work I am lecturer of psychology in Dundalk Institute of Technology. Working in academia along with my clinical work; for me, it's the perfect combination.

Three books we always come back to, recommend to the wonderful therapists in our centre and use for psychoeducation with clients. If you struggle with intrusive, obsessive or upsetting thoughts one of these might be worth looking at.

Last month I completed excellent training on mental imagery in therapy with the British Psychological Society. It's a fascinating evidence-based practice. Time to learn more on the topic ☺️☺️

Today was 'in-house' clinical supervision day.  All therapists registered with a professional body (e.g. BACP) must adhere to their quality standards, one part of this is clinical supervision.
In Newry Therapy Centre, naturally each therapist has their own supervisor.
But, we strive to be the very best and engage in best-practice in everything we do. This means all therapists in our centre meet once a month for team supervision.  Learning from each others is amazing for us and for our clients 🌟🌟

Today we:
1. Discussed queries regarding client work (anonymously of course). This makes sure our clients get the best care 🤗
2. Rhoda shared some knowledge bombs from her recent CPD on working with trauma, thanks Rhoda 😊
3. Management agreed on an amendment to our referral policy

**And we adore each other so this is definitely my favourite work meeting each month 🧡🧡

Ironically this is my third attempt at reading this book. Twice before I have started but got distracted 🙄

Distractions can take many forms, sometimes we are distracted by priorities such as family life or work commitments. But I find personally that many of my distractions are not big life events, in fact they are everyday things that steal my attention or draw me in.

Oftentimes we laugh and dismiss our distractions however those very distractions may mean that we ignore friends, miss valuable time with our children or let work and home life tasks build up.

Nir Eyal’s first message in this book is to recognise that distraction starts from within. It is more than our devices such as phones, tvs, gaming consoles, Instagram, TikTok and endless shows on Netflix or any number of streaming platforms. Cutting these out does not solve the problem on its own.

I recall from previous efforts to read the book that two strategies recommended to create traction (the opposite of distraction) is making a pact and time scheduling. My pact is to focus on reading this book for 15 mins three days a week. Anything more than that is a bonus. Scheduling it into my diary will help me achieve this goal 😊
