Thank you to everyone who helped this week during the recent flood risk.

A special mention to Brendan Downey and the team at Friar Tucks Sugar Island for assisting with sandbag distribution, and to Department for Infrastructure Rivers Agency, Newry, Mourne & Down, @ NI Fire and Rescue Service and , Mourne and Down District Council Council for their support on the day and at night.

We have had more rain than during the 2023 floods, but better preparation, low tides and effective mitigation meant we avoided serious flooding.

Risk remains high due to the water table, but water is currently getting away well. Replacement sandbags are now in place and we continue to monitor the situation closely.

Vigilance remains key and we will keep members updated as further rain is expected.

We would also like to remind members that the BID revote opened this week. A YES vote will enable Newry BID to continue to provide this kind of support on the ground.

RATES REVAL. UPDATEπŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

POSITIVE NEWS: Following sustained lobbying by BID, working alongside Ulster and others, the rate re-evaluation due in 2026 has been paused.

The Finance Minister has listened to the serious concerns raised by businesses, particularly in hospitality, and has now paused Reval. 2026.

This shows the value of collective action and strong representation. We will continue to engage on behalf of our members as next steps become clearer.

Thank you to all businesses who raised their concerns and supported this work. We will continue to lobby for a long-term, sustainable and fair rating policy for businesses.

πŸ“£ Storm Update – Store Status

Due to the ongoing storm, Newry and Dundalk stores are CLOSED today for the safety of our team and customers.

Massive thanks as always to the work of Eamon NEWRY BID getting us sandbags. Michael’s a pro at sandbagging now 😳 it’s all in a days work in small business, the day could throw up anything πŸ˜… and usually does!

βœ”οΈ All other stores are open as normal.

Thank you for your understanding and stay safe! 🌧️⚠️

The Newry BID team remain out on the ground supporting with flood concern management.
Water levels are dropping but remain worryingly high. The peak risk this evening (Tuesday 27th January) is high tide at 6pm.

It is expected to be a relatively dry night with an ice warning, both of which reduce the flood risk.
We have deployed sandbags and have more ordered.

Thank you so much to the Friar Tucks Sugar Island team who have been helping to distribute sand bags all day. πŸ‘ πŸ” πŸ‘

We continue to keep our BID members updated.
The key now continues to be preparation, communication and vigilance.

Newry BID has formally launched its revote ahead of the February 2026 ballot.

Eligible city centre businesses will be asked to vote on whether the BID should continue for a further five-year term, from 2026 to 2031.

Since 2016, Newry BID has delivered activity focused on promoting the city, supporting local businesses, improving safety and cleanliness, and representing business interests on key issues including rates, parking, flooding and regeneration.

Ahead of the ballot, extensive consultation has taken place with businesses to shape the proposed priorities for the next term. This included face-to-face engagement, independent online surveys, personalised email invitations and sector-based discussion groups.

Ballot papers will be issued in February 2026 and administered independently by Civica Election Services on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

All eligible businesses are encouraged to engage with the revote information and to use their vote.

Further details on the revote, key dates and the full proposal are available at www.newry.com

It was a busy night for the BID team and our partners Department for Infrastructure Rivers Agency, and Talon Security Ltd. dealing with flood risk.
We would like to say a special thanks to Brendan Digney, who was of great assistance.

The risk remains high and we would ask that you report any incidents to the Flood Line https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/reporting-flooding as this will direct issues to appropriate bodies (NI Water, DfI Roads or DfI Rivers typically).

Surface water flooding from blocked drains and gullies is a real issue. Reporting will enable better resource allocation to address problems.

We will keep members posted on any heightening of the risk. Please stay safe.

Festival secured for Newry!

Newry BID welcomes the news that a festival has been secured for Newry.

Following the success of Newry Goes Nashville, the BID has been actively lobbying local representatives on the importance of large-scale events for footfall, profile and economic impact.

We look forward to engaging with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and political representatives to help take this forward and maximise the opportunity for local businesses.

We are so, so proud of you Rachel Duffy! πŸ‘πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸŽ‰

Parking Relaxation Extended ....

Newry BID welcomes the extension to the parking relaxation in the city centre that we lobbied for before Christmas.

When you pay for on-street parking, you will have a one hour grace period after your ticket expires before you can potentially receive a parking ticket.

This support helps encourage footfall, supports local businesses and makes it easier for people to shop, dine and spend time in Newry.

We thank Minister Liz Kimmins and her team for their work on this as we seek a longer term, fairer parking solution.
