You can be disciplined.
You can be strong.
You can "go-go-go!" and move every day.

…and still feel weirdly disconnected from your body.

This is something many high-functioning women experience — especially mothers.

We lift, carry, train, organise, and push through.
Movement becomes efficient. Functional. Productive.

But not necessarily alive.

Strength alone doesn’t guarantee vitality.

On Monday, we’re going live for the final conversation in our series:

✨ Movement as Vitality: From Function into Flow

In Part 3, Malaika Sarco-Thomas and Alexandra Howard explore:

• why “pushing through” can deepen disconnection
• the missing link between strength and aliveness
• how nervous system safety restores flow and responsiveness
• why expression — not perfection — is the gateway to vitality
• simple ways to bring joy, sensuality, and flow back into daily movement

This conversation is for women who want more than functionality.

It’s for those who want to feel present, responsive, and at home in their bodies.

We will share our top tips, and lead some movement exploration!

Embracing Being Seen

This was our theme today in our ongoing conversation about Feminine Aliveness.

In Ways of Seeing (1972), John Berger wrote:

“Men act and women appear.

Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at.”

He argued that Western art has historically framed women as the viewed, while men occupy the role of the lookers who control the gaze.

As a young feminist and dance student at Hollins University — a women’s college — I believed we could challenge the confines placed on our bodies. I resisted the idea that women were meant to be seen rather than seers.

Then motherhood invited me to embrace this idea in an entirely new way.

Because in relation to her children, "Mama is always on stage."

And this stage matters a LOT — it is where the next generation learns how to be in the world.

In our conversation, Alexandra Howard and I explore how our understanding of feminine aliveness has evolved over the years, and we share practical ways women can reconnect with this quality in their lives.

Tomorrow, Monday 11.30am EST / 4.30pm UK time - we're talking about BEING SEEN as women.

Have you heard women complain about always being looked at?
Yes, it can be inconvenient.

But, it's also our gift.

And guess who is watching women the MOST?

Our kids.

Mama is always on stage.

Tomorrow we're talking about embracing being seen as part of a path toward aliveness.

"Enjoy Seeing and Being Seen" - this is one of my favourite improvisation scores.

What are you seeing right now?

Enjoy it!

Hope to see you soon!

Tomorrow is Part 2 in my 3-part conversation with Alexandra Howard, the Queen of Aliveness. Next Monday same time will be the third conversation.

"Can we play Smooth Criminal, mom?"
Every morning recently I get the same request: Michael Jackson.

I reckon my 4-year-old has great taste. MJ's got style. Originality. Aplomb. Spice. Grit.

Not to mention presence.

Presence is something you can't buy.
Instead you gotta shimmer it -- through embodied conviction.

Shimmering comes, however, from shaking, moving, and grooving.

You gotta connect deeply with the body every day to wake up the sparkle!

and shine like the beautiful diamond that you are.

The women who work with me in my 4 Minutes to Fabulous program find their sparkle -- in a very simple, beautiful way.

They realise:
“…I don’t need hours to be strong. I just need the right movements, done consistently.”

“…my body isn’t broken. It just needs intelligent, targeted support.”

“…I can be a devoted mother / CEO / leader and still prioritize my strength, sensuality, and self.”

Through a simple daily practice -- and support with a community of like-minded women -- they find their presence again.
.. and they find it's an even better one than before!
Stronger, clearer, more vital.

May we each discover our presence as the rockstar we are.

🤩

Michael, we love you.

And may we all continue to be inspired by your sparkle.

Hey mamas - I thought you might enjoy this short stretching sequence-- spirals can be an odd movement to learn if we haven't been practicing it, but this is a low impact way to explore spiral patterns on the floor, while deepening into some elongation.

Thanks to Karla Wolfangle, Steve Paxton, and many other wonderful dance teachers in my lineage.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Three mega-trends in women's fitness in 2025:

1- a 'snatched' waist

(because impossible vanity sells, and that word is cute)

2- mobility routines

(because it's kinda fresh and cool)

3- building muscle through weight training

(because science proves that building muscle builds your brain)

But what irks me is that:

-'snatched' ain't practical for most normal women

(it's just another silly visual to chase)

- the top experts selling mobility routine move like a robot- reps, rather than soft connection.

(real mobility comes from the intelligent design of SMART movement)

- building muscle doesn't mean women should marry dumbbells and start to look like The Rock with a ponytail

(strong is about how you feel, how you meet the challenges of life, and like, 'can you pick up your kid without throwing your back out?')

My answer is a simple daily routine that maximises every woman's functional strength and graceful mobility in 4 minutes.

Without kettlebells.

Without robotics.

Without bulky muscles.

I don't go with the crowd.

But, by following my routine, my students are quietly shining, excelling, and happily holding their own among the heavy lifters: the Stacie Sims, the Vanja Moves, and other heroines of Women's Fitness in 2025.

My waist is a little 'snatched' but I actually don't care about abs. Six-packs are not my aim.

I care about being healthy, strong, and functional.

I care about feeling great, and helping my family feel great.

I care about helping women focus on what matters: feeling great, so you can show up great for others.

This week I saw a mom write in the Postpartum Fitness FB group:

"What is 'snatched'? I keep hearing women talking about getting a 'snatched waist'. Girl, I don't care about that - I just want to pick up my kid without my back giving out!"

I say:

Good for her- She's got her priorities straight!

And:

Head on over to my course, 'Four Minutes to Fabulous', where you'll learn exactly how to get there in 4 minutes a day.

Because the goal should be to bloom.

I was 45 years old when I learned that kids are better than kettlebells.

Squats are better in a team.

Banana rolls are the ticket to spine health and core strength training in one fun challenge.

Try to roll your body across the floor without letting your head, arms, or legs touch the floor. Keep limbs hovering no matter what.

It ain’t easy, but it’s fun! 🤩
