✨ Why postural alignment matters more than you think

Good seating isn’t just about comfort.

Proper pelvic positioning and trunk alignment can:

• Improve upper limb function
• Support respiratory efficiency
• Reduce abnormal tone patterns
• Enhance attention and engagement
• Minimise fatigue over prolonged sitting

When the pelvis is stable, the body has a foundation to work from.

That’s why adjustable, configurable seating is key - because every individual’s postural needs are unique.

If you’re reviewing a child’s seating provision, ask:
➡ Is the pelvis in neutral?
➡ Are feet fully supported?
➡ Is trunk alignment symmetrical?
➡ Can adjustments be made as needs change?

We’re always happy to support clinicians with product guidance and technical information.

đź©· Rare Disease Day đź©·

Rare conditions are not rare for the children and families living with them every day.

At Smirthwaite, we work closely with clinicians, therapists, and families to design specialist equipment that supports children with complex and rare conditions — helping them to be comfortable, included, and able to participate as fully as possible in daily life.

This Rare Disease Day, we stand with the rare disease community to raise awareness, champion understanding, and support children whose needs are often unseen.

Together, we can help make the invisible visible.

Bridging the gap in paediatric postural care ✨

Our TPA, Chris Statham, recently had the pleasure of visiting the Seating Team at the East London NHS Foundation Trust at West Ham Lane Health Centre for a specialised "Lunch & Learn" session.

Clinical reasoning is at the heart of everything we do. During the session, we dived deep into the "why" behind equipment selection, focusing on:

✔️ Developmental Transitions: Discussing the clinical indicators for when a child should move up to more complex seating or transition down to chairs like the Brookfield and Juni.
✔️ The Hardrock Rationale: Tackling the important distinction between postural support and restraint to ensure the Hardrock chair is used correctly within local schools.
✔️ Innovation in Practice: Introducing the team to the Indigo and Samba chairs to expand their clinical options.

The collaboration doesn't stop here. We're excited to be moving forward with Enabled Living Healthcare to streamline inventory listings, and working alongside the Trust’s Clinical Lead to support the refreshing and recycling of stock across the Borough.

A huge thank you to Phoebe Bazalgette and the rest of the Specialist Children & Young People’s Service for such an engaging and proactive session.

Helping clinicians find the right fit - at the right time for every child. 🌟
