Dealing with Narrow Doorways
Anyone else find UK doorways ridiculously narrow? Older buildings are the worst for this. Quick tip - measure your chair width with your hands on the wheels, because you're actually wider than you think!

Best approach is straight on, not at an angle. If your armrests come off, take them off temporarily. For really tight spots, make sure the door's fully open and take your time positioning yourself.

If a doorway just won't work with your chair, it's completely reasonable to ask about getting it widened, whether it's at home or work. And please don't wreck your chair or the walls trying to force it - there's nearly always another way!

Anyone got their own tips for dealing with this?

Look after your hands - they work hard! 💪
If you push yourself around, wheelchair gloves are brilliant. They protect your hands, give you better grip, and make everything more comfortable.
What you want:
✨ Fingerless so you can still do stuff
✨ Padded palms
✨ Rubber grip for when it's wet
✨ Essential in winter
They're cheap, last ages, and honestly essential.

🚀 Dreams Have No Limits 🌟
Michaela Benthaus, a 33-year-old German aerospace engineer, just made history as the first wheelchair user to travel to space CNN on December 20th!
After a spinal cord injury from a 2018 mountain biking accident CNN, Michi didn't let her circumstances define what was possible. She turned her focus to engineering and space research, proving that accessibility isn't about fitting into existing systems—it's about redesigning those systems for everyone.
During her Blue Origin flight, Michi left her wheelchair behind to experience weightlessness, floating freely among the stars and gazing down at Earth. When asked about her experience, she said it simply: "You should never give up on your dreams, right?" NBC News
But here's what makes this truly powerful: Michi's goal is to make not only space accessible to people with disabilities, but to improve accessibility on Earth too. NBC News She's not just achieving her own dreams—she's opening doors for all of us.
"I really hope it's opening up for people like me, like I hope I'm only the start," NBC News she said after landing.
This is just the beginning. When we fight for accessibility in the most challenging environments, we make progress everywhere.
To every wheelchair user reading this: Your dreams are valid. Your potential is limitless. And the barriers you face aren't about what you can't do—they're about what the world hasn't yet built for you.
Keep reaching for the stars. ✨♿

Don't trust the range on the box! 📦
Powered chair manufacturers always quote maximum range under perfect conditions - flat ground, moderate speed, average weight, new battery, and warm weather. But real life isn't a lab test!
Hills, rough terrain, cold weather, heavier users, aging batteries, and high speeds all drain your battery faster than expected. I learned this the hard way, and I don't want anyone else to experience the stress of running out of power away from home.
My golden rules:

Never plan journeys based on maximum range
Always allow at least 25% safety margin
Know where charging points are along your route
Carry a mobile charger for longer trips

Running out of power when you're out isn't just inconvenient - it can be dangerous. Plan conservatively, and you'll never get stranded!
Stay safe out there! 💙

Travelling with a wheelchair does not have to be stressful. A little planning can help a lot.

Before flying, take clear photos of your wheelchair from all sides. Label it with your contact details and secure any loose parts. If your chair has air-filled tyres, carry basic tools and a spare inner tube. It also helps to know your wheelchair’s size and weight.

Always check the airline’s wheelchair policy and book assistance in advance. This helps your wheelchair arrive safely so you can enjoy your trip.

Getting a wheelchair into the boot can be tricky, but proper technique makes all the difference. Here’s how to do it without hurting your back:

1️⃣ Strip it down: Remove the cushion, footplates, and any removable accessories to reduce weight.
2️⃣ Get a grip: Hold the solid frame, not the moving wheels.
3️⃣ Lift smart: Bend those knees! lifting with your legs is far stronger than lifting with your back.
4️⃣ Slide, don't carry: Rest the chair on the boot edge and slide it in.

(Pro tip: Put a blanket down first to protect your bumper!)

Double-tap if you found this helpful and share it with someone who needs these tips! ❤️

Cold weather can reduce battery range ❄️
If your powered chair feels different in winter, it is normal.

Keep it stored somewhere warm, charge it regularly, and plan ahead on frosty days. Once indoors, performance returns as the battery warms up.

Small steps make a big difference.

Got a spare wheelchair sitting around? 🦽 Store it right to keep it in top condition!
Damp garages and sheds = rust and mould. Indoor storage is your best bet.

Clean it thoroughly first
Slightly inflate tyres (not fully)
Cover with an plastic sheet
Store somewhere dry

Your wheelchair seatbelt or positioning strap is there for a reason – use it! Whether you're in a powered chair or being pushed by someone else, it's your safety net against slides and falls, especially on slopes and uneven surfaces. This isn't about restriction; it's about confidence and security. Quick reminder: when travelling in a vehicle, your wheelchair belt and car seatbelt work as a team – you need both to stay properly protected!
